Kitten sneezing

Help me get a grip - I’m envisaging worst case scenarios and given how upset dd(8) was after we lost our last cat I’m getting into a state!

We got 2 kittens on Friday - 9 weeks old, had their first vaccinations. From cats protection.

They’re brothers and lovely - noticed one of them was sneezing occasionally but today he is sneezing a bit more.

I’ve messaged the cat shelter and they said he had ‘sniffles but had treatment’ . Phoned the vet and the first time they can see him is tomorrow night. The nurse said if he was eating drinking and playing then not to worry. Cat shelter said one of two sneezes a day is normal but 10+ isn’t. He’s done 6 in last 10 minutes but just single sneezes every couple minutes! Car shelter also said feel his ears for fever - earlier they just felt same as his brothers just skin temp. Just now they felt cold.

I’m envisaging losing him and it passing on to his brother. I know it sounds pathetic but we’ve had loads of family bereavements and when our old cat died it really massively affected dd.

Any experience / advice / ideas?

Anyone? His brothers sneezed a few times today but not as much.

The original sneezer has eaten fine all day but hasn’t had much supper but did have some

My kitten sneezed a few times when she was a baby - vet was relaxed about it but did check her regularly.

Check on them during the night - if you are really worried your vet will have an out of hours number. If you make it through to the morning and are still this worried ring the vet and ask for an emergency appointment. They will fit you in if you are upset (my lovely vet thinks I am neurotic, but always sees me when I am worried).

Hopefully they will be fine - my little baby recovered and grew into a lean mean (curtesy wootsy) killing machine😊.

I would also recommend you post for advice on he cat chat section of the pets forum uk, there are often vets on and very experienced cat owners who give fantastic advice.

Thank you

How are they this morning?

Have only heard him sneeze a couple of times. He’s had some food but maybe not as much as he had been having. Can’t decide if he’s snoring or not ! Purring and playing loads.

It's very likely to be viral catflu. Common in both rescue and breeding establishments. Kittens are usually infected young and then it can flare up in times of stress e.g moving to a new home. If they are eating, drinking and bright and lively then dont worry. Often they can get a secondary bacterial infection which causes more serious illness, in which case you need to see a vet for antibiotics. It may be recurrent, but it's usually mild.

It's highly contagious but try not to worry as its likely his brother and he were infected at the same time before you got them, so no need to separate them

My kitten was sneezing a lot, but he also had a scabby nose and gooey eyes. Vet said it was an upper respiratory infection. Gave him an antibiotic injection and the sneezing eased up around a week later. He’s started sneezing again though in the last few days so I’m keeping an eye on him.

Vet wasn’t concerned as his nose and eyes are clear so we have just to keep watching.

Typically the other kitten is now limping - they do play pretty rough so I’m hoping he’s just bumped it a wee bit!

A lot of vet visits in the first year. My little nightmare has just turned one and has cost me a fortune in vets fees😊. Always below the insurance excess though. I clearly didn’t know enough when I took the insurance out.

Hoping to avoid the vets As although he’s limping when he walks he’s also running / jumping / fighting etc

Also yesterday he got his claw caught in the mat under his food bowl and had it at an awkward angle whilst eating so I wonder if he’s pulled a muscle
