New kitten has gunky eyes

Noticed today his eyes are a bit stuck up, only get him yesterday. Ive bathed them with sterile saline. Do I keep doing this or does he need to see the vet on Monday? Could it be serious?

I would keep doing it but also see the vet as he may need worm and/or flea treatments and you'll need to find out about vaccinations

MadamePompadour · 27/07/2019 16:29

Thanks. He's had first vaccinations, I have the card. But he's due his next lot in a couple of weeks. He's been fleaed and wormed.

If his eyes aren't better on Monday I will take him to the vet.

I’d ring in the morning tbh. One of ours reacted to their first shots like this too but lived to 17.

It's Sunday tomorrow, do you think it warrants an emergency appt? The eyes have been clear since they were last wiped mid afternoon.

My kitten used to get this. I just would wipe it and see how he is. Does his eyes look sore?

MadamePompadour · 27/07/2019 18:35

Don't think they look sore.

Aw so cute 🐈

MrsIronfoundersson · 27/07/2019 18:53

He is GORGEOUS! I think to be on the safe side, I should take him to make sure his eyes are fine ... you can never be too careful (and I've read all the James Herriot books so am practically a vet).

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/07/2019 19:39

Hang on, is this sleep like we get or wet gunky discharge?.

viccat · 27/07/2019 20:21

Did you get him from a reputable breeder or a rescue charity (and not a private individual advertising on social media etc.)?
If he's had a vet check and first vaccination, and seems bright and well in himself, it's not an emergency. Obviously keep an eye on him for any other symptoms such as lethargy or being off his food.

As others have said, sometimes they react a bit to the vaccinations - similarly to humans sometimes feel like they get flu from a flu vaccine.

One of ours had gunky eyes to begin with. Cleaning them with cooled boiled water for a few days sorted it out.

concernedforthefuture · 27/07/2019 21:47

One of my kitties had this - 2 days after we picked them up at 10 weeks old. I treated at home with cooled boiled water with a pinch of salt (wiped a few times a day) and it cleared up fine within 24 hrs.

concernedforthefuture · 27/07/2019 21:49

Also meant to say a friend's cat also had gunky eyes in the week after they got him but he was very obviously unwell with it and needed veterinary treatment for cat flu. But I think you'd know if the cat was generally unwell or if it's just a little eye infection.

MadamePompadour · 28/07/2019 00:03

He seems well in himself. I mean he sleeps quite a bit, but I think that's normal for small kittens? He's perky when he's awake. He's eating ok, good wees and poos. I don't think there's anything else wrong with him.....he sneezed once yesterday but that's it.

I got him from a private breeder, she breeds a lot of birmans.

Now every time he's having a nap I'm worried if it's lethargy or normal kitten tiredness.

His vaccination card shows he was vaccinated 6 days ago, so he saw a vet then.

I'd say it's more wet, gunky discharge not sleep.
