How to cover the smell of leftover cat food

Especially in this weather, it is causing my bins to smell rancid. I can even smell the outdoor bin while it’s closed🤢 bins are collected every two weeks, so it festers and washing them after every colllection only helps on the day.

Is there a way to cover the smell without using millions of plastic nappy bags? I have tried bin freshener/bicarb but I need tons of it to make a difference.

I have 3 cats, and they all seem to be unpredictable with food. Sometimes they will leave the bowls spotless, sometimes it will be untouched so I don’t want to only put smidgens out and they go hungry while I’m at work (don’t always work same hours, so sometimes I’ll be out for 6 hours other days 10).

I have tried keeping a separate bag just for cat food to chuck in on collection day but by day 3 it’s rank and attracts flies.

Any ideas?

Dry food instead? Mine eat biscuits in summer.

Flush it down the toilet. My Mum had a maggot problem due to her extremely high maintenance, fussy and spoiled cat refusing to eat the first two choices of cat food. That's what she had to do.

I also flush any leftover cat food down the toilet. The smell of the cat pee „balls“ in the garbage is bad enough already but at least it doesn‘t attract flies and the like.

I feed any left over food to the foxes.

I had no idea you could flush it down the loo, might try a mix of that and leaving dry food out during the day (if their majesties will eat it that is)

That’s a good idea tcn I’ve never seen foxes around here but it’s worth a go.

Lots of birds, squirrels and hedgehogs though. I’ll have a google and see if it could be harmful though.

Well cat food is the best thing for foxes - they also need taurine - just like cats do. Magpies, rooks etc also love it. I think it's also good for hedgehogs. I can't imagine squirrels being interested.

I have had a major maggot and smell problem in the past due to Megcat's fussyness and flushing down the loo definitely works but this year I discovered Jeyes Bin Fresh Powder. It's a shakey tub of powder disinfectant and it's fab, you sprinkle in bottom of the wheelie bin when it's emptied then each time you add a bag. No smell or maggots even in this heat and it soaks up any leakage as well. Lasts ages, I have been using since April and not even half way down.

Leftover food getting fly blown is why I switched to dry food.

You can freeze it...we kept a box in the garage freezer for things like fish skin or chicken carcass etc

3 weekly collection now where I live. I have a bin full of leftover cat food, cat litter and nappies 🤢the smell in the weather is disgusting I had to bleach the maggots and flies the other day. I will definitely be getting some of that powder mentioned above!

We feed on demand in this weather. There are always biscuits out but when ours come and “ask” for it, we’ll then put wet food out...just the amount they’ll eat.

Cat food is fine for hedgehogs, it's what we feed them on at the wildlife rescue I volunteer at.

The only thing to avoid are any dried cat biscuits that have dairy content (whiskas for example have some bits in that have a sort of cheese paste inside).
