Thin old cat advice.

Please can any kind person recommend a cat food type for my ageing cat, who has become rather thin. I think a higher protein and higher fat dry and wet diet might help her?

She has no worms or fleas etc.

Thank you.

I would recommend a senior health check at the vets.

HappyHammy · 24/07/2019 21:03

I second a vet check up. sometimes cats get thin if they have an underlying medical condition.

Have blood tests been done? Are her teeth OK?

Marmitebread · 24/07/2019 21:18

Combined with regular vet checks, vaccinations etc we gave our old ladies and gents mainly Hills Science Plan dry cat food. 7+ is good but the ordinary is fine according to our vet. One had to be PTS at 19, another 16 and another at 18; so good stuff!

Bringing up the 2 new kittens and an older chap on dry Hills and any tinned stuff they will eat in the hot weather.

My elderly cat lost weight and turns out she is hyperthyroid - best to get her checked out at the Vets.

PolkadotLollipop · 25/07/2019 11:52

Yep, very probably thyroid issues. Very common in elderly cats. Mine had it too. He had an overactive thyroid gland and ended up having a thyroidectomy at 16yo. He lived to be 21.

Yep, definitely vet check up and blood test. Older cats don't just get thin for no reason, most have either hyperthyroidism or kidney disease, or both.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2019 13:17

Yes get the thyroid checked. Sparklingcat has an overactive thyroid.

Trickyteens · 25/07/2019 17:09

Thank you. She is almost 17, I think, based on age of children when we got her.

Kitten food is higher calorie, my vet recommended it to put some weight on mine. Anything a bit fatty too, mine adores roast chicken skin
