Matted fur

I’ve got a long haired moggy and while he’s the most chilled cat normally , the sight of a brush makes him attack. I’ve just managed to cut out some matted balls on his tummy. We give treats , DD and I both pet him while we brush but just can’t keep on top of the knots. Any tips ?

I had to take my cat to a groomer to get rid of matts. They had to shave him

Which brush do you use?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 21/07/2019 20:15

It’s an angled , flat , spiky metal brush. Got it from pets at home.

Have you tried zoom groom?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 21/07/2019 21:26

We have a purple one - I don’t use it as thought wouldn’t be any use . Are they good ?

Yes, we use one every couple of days. Our cat seems to really like it and he gets lots of whose a pretty boy while we doing it.

Thanks ! I’ll give it a try

You need a metal comb or a tangle teaser for a long haired cat. Zoom grooms and furminators don't work. I take mine to a groomer everything few months and she trims their tummy abs clips their armpits and trousers.

I second the praise for a metal comb for long haired cats.

I would also keep the grooming sessions very short. Just do a little bit each day.

Is his coat and skin in good health? Bad skin will lead to dandruff getting caught up in his fur and make it much harder to keep smooth and tangle free. I changed food for my cat and her coat is so much better now with much less matting.

We had to resort to a cat groomer in the end too. She shuts our cat into a cage then puts the shower on her. Cuts out the matts, blow dries her then shaved her tummy fur down. We need it about twice a year and it costs £60 ish each time.

Where is Medusa with her pictures of darling Obie?

Zoom grooms will do nothing for matts on a long haired cat other than make them worse.

If the matting is very close to the skin it is kinder to just have them clipped off as brushing them out can be painful and cats also have quite delicate skin compared to dogs for example. Try using a long toothed metal comb rather than a brush as a brush might not get down to the roots where matts start.

Thanks everyone - I’ve got a tangle teezer so will try that. And I’ll find a cat groomer nearby too.
