Getting my first kitten on Friday

Ive had cats before but never a kitten. We do currently have a 9yo cat so have been reading about cat introductions. Ive introduced an adult cat to an adult cat before so I know there may well be some grumpiness.

I've ordered a cat litter tray and cat litter, has been many years since I needed one. Just got pets at home clumping cat litter. Are different brands any better? Do I need deordorizer and tray liners?

Does anyone know if an 11week old kitten can jump over a baby gate? Cat food is currently in the utility room behind a stair gate to keep the dog out. If a small kitten can't manage a gate we may need to rethink this. I guess we could keep kitten and kitten food in DD's bedroom away from the dog until kitten can jump the gate. Dd is an adult so can be trusted with a small kitten!

Cat flap is a microchip one so while kitten won't be able to open it is there a danger he could sneak out after existing cat? I'm not sure whether we need to lock it shut for a while?

We use wood pellet litter. It absorbs the wee and stops the smell. Just remove any poo as soon as you see it and you won’t get any smell
Our cats could jump a stair gate. How tall is it?ours was a tall one

It's just a fairly standard gate, maybe 60cm.....would be good if he can jump it from the start.

Would the kitten not fit through the gaps of a stair gate? Plus we just use the cheapest litter going and clean when needed.

Kitten will be able to dash through the gap in the bars- they can get through the tiniest of spaces. And from what I recall of mine when they were kittens, jumping and climbing was never an issue for them.

Just make sure the litter is cleaned regularly, and it should be ok.

One little recommendation- go everywhere in your house and block of any gaps even a couple of inches big- like I said, kittens can squeeze in to tiniest gaps. On their first night home at 9 weeks my boy cat managed to get in to a gap that led him underneath the kitchen cupboards and we had to demolish the plinths to get him out.

Many congrats on your new furry companion.

I haven't seen him in the flesh yet, so not sure how tiny he will be but yes he may be able to get through the bars. Good tip about blocking any small gaps up.

I will post kitten photos up when he arrives. He's a Birman.
