I'm considering it for my two cats and am looking for tips and suppliers please. Thanks

We feed ours a mix of raw turkey, cut in longish thin slices ( they love it like that and room temperature). we do buy it from supermarket. We also use the James Wellbeloved pouches which is cereal free and gives them all the nutrition they need. We have an elderly cat and she needs some medication which I crush and push inside a slice of turkey, she'll eat it with great enthusiasm when she's hungry. BTW she's running now, minus a leg!!

DD2 gives hers Luna and Me frozen raw (in different varieties) they come in hamburger shapes.

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 12/07/2019 17:04

Thanks. I'm going to give it a try

I think the cereal free bit is one of the most important parts, their behaviour really changes when they're not eating it, esp. wheat which is in almost every animal feed product. It makes them weird!

I've never noticed a cat grinding up it;s own flour and making bread\kibble Grin

If you are considering commercial raw diets you should read this peer reviewed article about tuberculosis in 90 cats in the UK fed commercial raw diets.

Singlenotsingle · 12/07/2019 17:41

I feed my dog just meat and occasional vegetables. (Cooked). No cereal, no mixer, no additives. She's fit as a flea!

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 12/07/2019 19:03

@Lonecatwithkitten thanks for that I've just been reading about it

Exactly Single

Lonecat Make sure your 'peer reviewed' article isn't paid for by the 'normal' cat food manufacturers who are responsible for most of the ill health in our pets and who must be annoyed by people feeding their pets raw food ( it affects their profits) how are they going to stop cats hunting and eating raw food? which is of course the natural way for them to eat

Lonecatwithkitten · 13/07/2019 09:52

@ppeatfruit not funded by pet food companies in any way. Funding is from the (BBSRC) Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The link I gave was to International Cat Care an independent NGO dedicated to improving the health and welfare of cats.
The studied was carried out as Tuberculosis in cats is a notifiable disease and private practice vets were correctly notifying DEFRA of cases. A dramatic increase in incidence was notice and investigated.
There have been more than 90 cases in the last 12 months compared to 2 in the previous 10 years. As tuberculosis can be a zoonosis this a worrying and significant public health risk.
Nothing to do with scare mongering.

I wonder if the mice are carriers? Because that would be a problem. I do know that one of the strays we feed, eats lizards and sometimes looks ill in the summer. We can give him turmeric with his mixed food raw and James Wellbeloved pouches and he gets better. You can't pick him up to take him to the vets. He's too timid.

Vinorosso74 · 13/07/2019 11:56

Our vets have stopped selling raw food. I'm not sure if it is due to these findings or having been taken over.
I find there are always a lot of conflicting views on the best foods for cats. It's almost as contentious as opinions on weaning human babies!
I don't think whatever we feed them is going to be as ideal as if they were eating their natural prey.

LittleLongDog · 13/07/2019 12:10

My vet said you can’t just give cats raw chicken we would buy ourselves for example as it wouldn’t be enough of a balance.

I feel like a lot of research has been done into raw feeding for dogs but not for cats.

I feed mine the ‘True Instinct Raw’ which is actually dry food. It’s high protein biscuits plus freeze dried raw meat. You have to introduce it slowly but there’s a guide in the packaging.

At first my cat ate all the biscuits and left the raw but is now eating it all. And her coat is lovely and soft and she doesn’t seem itchy! (had previously posted a thread here about her poor coat and dry skin).

YesQueen · 13/07/2019 12:17

There's a decent Facebook group called cats completely raw and proud which has recipes etc
I raw feed bits alongside his wet (grain free high meat content). He loves heart and turkey mince but yes you have to balance it
There's a supplement called Felini (zooplus) which you just add to meat and water so that balances it for you
Mine used to also love raw chicken wings but he struggles now with only one tooth!

ppeatfruit · 13/07/2019 13:33

Yes very true Vinorosso BUT the vets sell a load of cereal based cat food which makes our cats ill, funny they should stop selling raw! They may have stopped now I haven't looked recently.

Vinorosso74 · 13/07/2019 13:48

Yes the cereal aspect in food isn't great but I guess if there is a risk of TB in the raw food that has much greater health implications especially as Lone stated it being zoonotic.
Ours actually sell (or used to at least) a wide range of higher quality foods. The vets there never used to push any particular food.

Minkies11 · 13/07/2019 13:52

We feed our a mostly raw diet but we buy and make ourselves. I found the sup plier bought raw food really expensive and neither cat would touch it Sad
We also steam fish for them which they love . I've never tried turkey mince so might give that a go!

ppeatfruit · 13/07/2019 13:59

What does zoonotic mean? I think that if you're mixing the right pouch food with some raw; James Loveday's is the best IMO and E he adds good vitamins plus some veg,. Lamb is a real favourite with our cats they do turkey too.

Our cats are much better than when we were giving them the popular , advertised cat foods. No one can tell me that a food that doesn't specify it's main ingredient e.g. ALL the main stream pet foods, is going to be any good.

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 13/07/2019 14:04

@YesQueen thank you I've joined the fbook group x

OP posts:
Vinorosso74 · 13/07/2019 14:15

Zoonotic refers to diseases/infections which can be spread between different animals species. TB and ringworm being two.

Lonecatwithkitten · 13/07/2019 14:35

Zoonotic means transmission between animals and humans. There has been direct transmission cats to humans, in fact a 12 year old girl whose cat slept on her bed. She endured 2 years of high dose antibiotics to clear her TB.
Mice have not been shown as carriers. The transmission to cats is believed to be badger and bovine from proximity. The raw food was all venison and we know deer are a species affected by TB. If I was to raw feed ( I am not opposed), but I would not feed venison as the TB testing is less accurate than in cattle.
The main carriers are humans, cattle, deer, camelids and badgers.

YesQueen · 13/07/2019 14:39

@Minkies11 I haven't given mine any for a while, just offered him some beef mince as I'm cooking and he wolfed it down Grin
Weirdly he hates liver but heart EnvyEnvy he loves

Minkies11 · 13/07/2019 15:31

Yesqueen mine aren't great with liver either but love raw heart! I mix chicken wings, heart and liver up and put it through the mincer. They eat it then Grin

ppeatfruit · 14/07/2019 11:11

Thanks Lonecat I'll remind dh to stop cuddling our stray Grin I don't allow cats on our beds anyway.
