What are you treating the cat with? Why is the cat not coming in?

broken1982 · 10/07/2019 08:25

She's always been flea'd and wormed on time so just continuing that but she's still scratching so much. We have 3 small children, one is only 6 days old. I won't have my kids covered in bites so the cats staying out until we find a way to get rid of them off the cat and out of the house. We have had to bin our expensive sofa that we still have another year of payment on

What are you treating the cat with? Have you used indorex in the house? Keeping the cat out won't necessarily help as a treated cat (with a vet flea treatment) will help kill active fleas (fleas bite cat and then die)

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/07/2019 11:51

It may be that the flea treatment you use no longer works (Frontline does nothing to fleas here.)
So treat the cat (Advocate works well for us) and treat the house (carpets, soft furnishings) with Indorex.
Getting an exterminator and disposing of furniture sounds a bit excessive)

SoupDragon · 10/07/2019 12:02

I agree - the treatment you are using is no longer effective, we had this with Frontline.

Advocate for the Cat and Indorex for the furniture (even the expensive sofa. I'm not sure why you threw it out)

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/07/2019 12:58

The eggs need to hatch and feed so the cat needs to be in for this to happen.

We use advocate. You can also get an injection to stop fleas breeding once they've bitten the cat.

You can buy indorex at supermarket pharmacies.

Thank you everyone. For the poster that said getting in an exterminator is excessive...they have been and treated every room twice now and still aren't rid of them so I highly doubt I could have gotten rid of them myself. I can't imagine ever being completely rid of them from the sofa so it's gone to the tip. I am going to be so scarred from all these bites and I just can't stop scratching!

The fleas have a stage of their lifecycle where they are in a pupa and nothing kills them at that stage. When they hatch, they look for something to bite, if the cat is not available they'll bite you instead. Treat the cat with something effective enough to kill the fleas quickly before they can lay eggs and let her in. If she is still itchy she needs to see a vet, flea infestations can trigger allergic skin disease that may need treatment. Hoovering every day will help to remove eggs, larvae, pupae from the house and will trigger dormant pupae to hatch out. Check what the exterminator used - you need something that contains an insect growth regulator which persists for a period of time. I think you've been very badly advised, a £20 can of indorex would have treated the environment and there was no need to get rid of furniture.

Patchworksack · 13/07/2019 19:29

Effective flea treatments from your vet - advantage or seresto collar (without prescription) or advocate, bravecto, stronghold, comfortis (all prescription only) plus a wormer that covers tapeworm, as fleas carry tapeworm.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2019 19:45

I fondly remember the great Fleamageddon of 2012... it was horrendous. Properly treated pets and Indorex sorted it. The pets "mopped up" any new hatched fleas. That's why the exterminator needed to come back to yours.

Thankfully we have not had a problem since and I have never ever been lax with the pets' flea treatment again!

SoupDragon · 13/07/2019 19:47

a £20 can of indorex

It's only about £9 online.

EAIOU · 13/07/2019 19:58

When we suspected ours did.

Frontline and flea comb. He hated it. We used the comb relentlessly. Flea collar on also. (He removed them many times).

We also used the indoor spray, (the fumes are intense) skirting boards, mattresses etc all nooks and crannies. I sprayed, hoovered and hot washed nearly everything in the house. No problem since.

This may sound weird but I only got bit by them, DP never really did. Is there a reason for this?

Also it is very psychological knowing they're there or possible some remaining.

Are you sure you have fleas and not bed bugs or something?
