Meet Martha my BSH kitten food suggestions please?

Hello this is Martha my 9 week old British short hair! She’s absolutely lovely and very affectionate, we’re in love with her. I’ve wanted a British short hair for years, didn’t realize you could get tortoise shell ones! She’s eating a mix of tesco wet food and whiskers, I know probably not the best but it’s what the breeder said she liked. If anybody has a suggestion please on any decent kitten food I’d appreciate it. Thanks Ali x

Royal canin do breed foods. People on here will say that Royal canin is rubbish but my Persians did really well in the Persian version.

Poppyfields21 · 27/06/2019 22:50

Have you already brought her home? 9 weeks is a bit young to leave mum...should really be at least 13 and I think that’s what the GCCF requires of breeders as a minimum but she is totally beautiful. Regarding food, Applaws wet food goes down a storm with my cats. I get it from zoo plus. I buy all my stuff online as find the pet store or vet prices extortionate!

YesItsMeIDontCare · 27/06/2019 22:54

Oh for goodness sake OP. You've got yourself a kitten that you clearly have no idea how to look after. PM your address so I can come and steal rescue her immediately.

😉

MustardScreams · 27/06/2019 22:58

Not Royal Canin, the only reason vets suggest this is because they are PAID to. Sorry @Toddlerteaplease! If it works for your cats it’s fine, but it’s really not great.

Miaowing Heads (cat food version of Barking Heads) is brilliant. V high meat content, only rice and oats in the kibble rather than shite fillers. Their wet food is also excellent.

Martha is beautiful!

Xxalisoncxx · 27/06/2019 23:04

Mum cat I was informed, managed to get out just 2 weeks ago and didn’t come back. I can assure everybody I am doing my best to look after her very well. She’s already been to the vets to be checked, vaccinated and microchipped. I certainly do know how to care for her. It’s been a very long time since I had a kitten and feeding has changed a lot, I was merely asking for suggestions. Not to be told I have no idea on how to look after her.

I think you're over reacting OP, re-read what was said above... And chill Smile She is absolutely lovely.

MustardScreams · 27/06/2019 23:17

Oh op! @YesItsMeIDontCare was only kidding, don’t take it to heart lovely.

YesQueen · 27/06/2019 23:24

My cat is picky Blush and only likes the good expensive stuff
Favourites include meowing heads, Lily's kitchen, almo nature, cosmo, nature's menu or blink. Zooplus and fetch often have good deals on
You tend to find they have a preference in texture. Mine likes mousse/pate/shredded but won't eat chunks of food
If you are feeding dry too, mine will eat wild freedom dry in preference to roast chicken (seriously, it's like crack for cats) HmmConfused and purr and miaow (pets at home) he had his head in the bag within seconds

YesItsMeIDontCare · 28/06/2019 00:16

😱 @Xxalisoncxx - I was just being silly!!! I'm so sorry!!! Here on The Litter Tray we often threaten to nick each other's cats (hell we often offer our cats when they're playing up).

I am so sorry 😢.

Here's my chap. We are actually, strictly, a one cat household.

It depends on your budget, applaws wet is 100% chicken but £1 for a tiny tin.

I currently use royal canin because I need a urinary diet and no infections since I started it.

It was go cat that triggered the last lot of urine infections, the vet said it is well known for doing that because of the levels of some of the minerals in it.

Harringtons is good, about 24% meat and a lot cheaper than most premium brands.

James Wellbeloved is also really high quality, no bad ingredients and a lot less expensive than anything the vet will recommend. There used to be good deals on it sometimes too.

Also agree with zooplus being excellent, but I wonder if it will still have the same deals after Brexit since it is a German company.

NameWithChange · 28/06/2019 00:46

Royal Canin do all sorts, not just the particular breed. They do kitten food, wet and dry food and you can buy online when various offers on to keep cheap. They do an Indoor cat food too if she is to stay indoors.

She is gorgeous BTW

NameWithChange · 28/06/2019 00:48

Oh and Bitiba worth a look

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2019 03:39

@MustardScreams, it was the rescue that recommended Royal Canin rather than a vet. They have a house full of about 15 Persians.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 28/06/2019 04:38

She’s lovely. Do you know I think she has really pointy ears for a BSH!

I feed my three girls BSH dry royal canin or purina urinary tract but as kittens I fed them the pink royal canin dry food

They like lots of different wet foods but not whiskas or sadly the cheaper supermarkets own brands though I’ve tried!
Applaws wet food tins and pouches are their very favourites

Bluerussian · 28/06/2019 05:22

Oh she is gorgeous. What beautiful ears!

I'm sure you're feeding her very well. Our vet, in fact all the vets we've seen over the years, have recommended Hill's Science Plan and we do buy that, also James Wellbeloved dried. They have pouches in the evening and sometimes fresh food or tinned tuna.

Martha will do well, she's landed on her feet. I love torties and the tortie and white is so attractive.

(I want her!)

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/06/2019 06:41

She might be a bit young for biscuits, I’d stick with wet and try her on a kitten food version of something you like the look of. There’s loads out there. As long as it’s cereal free. Most pouches are cereal free.

Just don’t bulk buy, they instantly go off it then. Luckily kittens are little dustbins so you’ve got a few months till food goes from being delicious to minging overnight.

No one ever offers to pinch my rascal of a Bengal 🤔.

moonpiggle · 28/06/2019 22:09

Martha is beautiful! Wow..never seen a tortie bsh..beauty. Can i ask why people slate royal canin? Mine has been on it for nearly 2 years and she has blossomed..i feed her RC indoor 27 and its the only dry food she will eat.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/06/2019 22:28

Probably the cereal content.

MustardScreams · 28/06/2019 22:44

Royal Canin has been cleverly marketed with all the different ‘types’ for breeds or ailments, but it is full of crap fillers and cereals. They don’t even list the meat percentage on the ingredients list. No cat needs to be eating a food where very often the first or second ingredient is wheat or maize. Cats are carnivores, grains should make up an absolutely minimal part of their diet, if at all.

No but I'm happy to send you another one Grin.

And you have a very pretty kitten OP.

Bluerussian · 29/06/2019 22:42

I've come back for another look and she is the most perfect little girl cat in the world. You're going to have lots of fun with her. I can imagine her following you around and mewing. Gorgeous creature, she will love chasing a little ball around.

( I want her)

FogCutter · 29/06/2019 22:49

Those ears are adorable!

Mog6840 · 29/06/2019 23:18

Other posters might slate it but I really rate Royal Canin and so does my BSH!

When I got him the breeder had him
on felix wet food and Iams biscuits which I understood to be not ideal.

My best friend and her husband are vets and they recommended royal canin. I highly doubt they would recommend a food to a friend that they didnt really believe in and I know they feed their own cat Royal Canin. I don't buy it from them. I order it online.

My cat just has dry food and we have a cat drinking fountain to encourage him to drink enough to avoid urinary problems.

Poppyfields21 · 30/06/2019 13:05

Please be careful feeding dry food only. Cats are prone to dehydration which can cause bladder issues. They need some wet food as they won’t drink enough water themselves. In nature they would get moisture from food.

TastingTheRainbow · 01/07/2019 20:37

She’s absolutely beautiful, but she’s not a BSH.

She’s a domestic short hair, AKA moggy. Hope you haven’t been lied to / paid a lot.

Her ears, face shape, eye colour and fur are totally wrong for a BSH.

You really should make sure you get registration papers if buying a pedigree kitten otherwise you could be paying well over the odds that don’t what someone says it is.
