Mouth problems

My 12 year old FIV + girl has a big mouth ulcer and a swollen back tooth. We just took her to the vets and she now has pain killers and antibiotics. She has had bad breath for 2 weeks and I think has been suffering for that long as she has also lost weight (skinny to start with) but I have only just realised she has mouth problems so I feel really bad that she has probably been in pain for a while 😭. We are taking her back in a week when the vet will probably approve her for some dental surgery.

Ha anyone had similar experience with their kitty? I'm feeling anxious about her.

Hope she is better soon!
Sev was just for his annual check up and we were advised to have his teeth cleaned under sedation in the autumn to avoid inflammations.
We're going to save up for this as it is not covered by insuarance - luckily fees for vets are regulated same as for human doctors so I know what to expect.

When I wanted to adopt Mia, I had to wait for a couple of weeks because she had extensive dental surgery (plus had pancreatitis and got spayed and chipped). She is missing half her teeth including one fang but is doing absolutely fine. She now occasionally gets tartar which the vet had been able to remove with his fingers thus preventing her from having to be sedated.

Thanks for sharing stories!
It's going to be expensive I'm sure, expecting £500 or more and I don't think insurance will pay. I think my girl is brighter now we are giving her painkillers and antibiotics so I really hope we can get her sorted out. She's definitely purring a whole lot more.

This week's update from the vet is that her mouth has improved quite a bit and she has even put on weight this week!
She is painfully thin so I am delighted about this. Next week the vet will assess her for future dental surgery Confused.

So far two visits and two medicines has cost £120 so I predict >£500 by the time she has had the surgery 😭

We noticed our girl (usually v greedy) was a bit off her food back in February, so booked her in at the vet. Over the weekend before her appointment she started refusing treats, and I was certain it was dental - I was actually relieved because Google was throwing up all sorts. Other than being off her food, she was 100% her usual self, rampaging about, climbing trees, rolling about on the wheelie bin (fave) purring, head booping, demanding to be fed, but then clearly not comfortable eating.

She ended up having six teeth out under a general, plus a scale and polish - apparently there was something called root resorption going on. She was a bit wobbly after the GA, but desperate to go out, which wasn’t allowed, and back to normal after 24 hours. We had to give her what was essentially Corsodyl for a fortnight after, plus a painkiller - both of those went down brilliantly.

None of it was covered by our insurance, and it came in at about £700 in total, including the initial consultation, x-rays, and bloods. The estimate was way off, once they got her under they realised it was worse than initially thought, so I was REALLY glad I had my credit card!

How old was your cat Judy? And what a huge bill!!! I fear ours may be similar 😭

She’s only five, snog. The bill was a real shock, DP paid about £150 when he took her in initially, and then the estimate was about £250 for the actual treatment. When they said it was £536 (etched in my mind!) when we went to collect her I almost fainted. I’m not sure what they would have done if we couldn’t pay all that since the work had been done? I had budgeted the £250, but another £250 on top was going to be difficult - especially when we hadn’t expected any of it!
