Cat and the Roof.

I keep finding SnoreCat on the roof. He is going out via various open upstairs windows and climbing up on the roof. He shouts are he is doing it. His BBF is in the garden and is totally confused.

How do I stop him? Or do I let him carry on til he gets bored, or falls off. I am quite worried that he is going to fall off the roof. He tried to slide down our solar panels. He shouts at me that he is stuck all the time. He then sees the gutter and needs to attack it, I’m wondering how long til he falls off.

I would leave him to it. He won't fall off. Mine does it all the time and makes his way in/down when he's had enough. The second week I had him I went out to call him in one evening to hear him shouting but couldn't see him. After much calling and shaking of the biscuit box I saw him 40ft up a pine tree. There was no way I could get to him so I left him to it. He was in the kitchen all innocent and unscathed in the morning 🐱

My parents almost had a heart attack when they saw their cat walking along the ridge of a neighbours bungalow roof. He gets down with no problem. But he's discovered if he sits on the conservatory roof, my dad will come and stand on a ladder to rescue him. He is perfectly capable of getting down by himself!Hmm

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/06/2019 19:34

Well, he hasn’t fallen off yet....

But he isn’t very coordinated and doesn’t jump well. He slides backwards down the conservatory roof calling me to help him.

DH said he’s training me, because I run to the window shaking treats to get him back in again.

I’m so worried he’s going to fall. DC came back from school and said he was on the ridge of the roof.

My parents' neighbour once rang them to say that if they'd lost their cat, he was sitting on their chimney pot. She appeared for her supper not long afterwards.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/06/2019 21:00

Shut the windows. If he’s not sure footed he won’t know that he can fall.

The number of times our muppet has got stuck on the conservatory roof and I've had to climb out of the bedroom window to haul him in.

Sometimes they are just daft twats, ours is yet to learn after 4 years.

EskewedBeef · 27/06/2019 21:08

My slothcat loves going on the roof whenever the opportunity presents itself. It's the only thing she thinks is worth moving for. Right to the top, then meeeeeeoooow until a crowd gathers.

That reminds me of a cat we had when I was a child. My mother called him in for his dinner and unbeknown to her he was on the garage roof. He ran down he roof, it was quite a steep slope, realised his mistake. tried to stop himself on the guttering but managed to propel himself further and landed in a start formation on the coal shed path!
He died many many years later after numerous other near misses.
I’d leave the windows open a crack so he couldn’t get out.

I keep forgetting to close the windows. He had the door open today, but chose to go upstairs and climb out of a window to shout at me. He slips down the conservatory roof shouting “help”. His BBF was rolling his eyes at him. BBF is much older and wiser.

I will try and remember to close the windows.

Honestly I think they mostly learn and work within their limits. Our cat spends a lot of time on the extension roof and the neighbours conservatory, and manages to handle himself.

The only exception was when the sloping glass conservatory roof was covered in heavy snow and he jumped across, had no idea how to get a purchase, slid downwards and did a sort of despairing ski jump into the privet hedge ...

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/06/2019 18:38

Well today he found a way out of the window and onto the awnings. My neighbours told me they’d watched him, and were chatting to him.

I’m hoping he is more sure footed than he appears. He is always falling off walls so he does know about falling. He is really light as he’s so tiny.

I do feel protective over him because he was rescued as an older kitten and hadn’t had a good life.

We have a loft conversion, and regularly hear our 16 month olds running around on top together, not much fun at 4am in the morning, at least not for me. I'm worried one will chase the other off, but as far as I know there's been no accidents.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/06/2019 21:47

He thought the awning was a lovely hammock. He was lying on his back with his paws in the air. He’s about 16 months old.

Our cat used to love the roof to our extension (and the neighbours'). I think it was probably the warmest place to sit if the sun had been out.

I am not sure whether they are stocking them this year, but Poundland sold flyscreen material for windows with sticky velcro to put on the frame to hold the material on. For us it stopped DD panicking if a bee flew in, but it might deter a cat too.

viccat · 29/06/2019 10:31

A fall from that height would absolutely be dangerous.

sashh · 29/06/2019 10:43

Fortunately I live in a bungalow because mine loves the roof.

For a few years a sparrow used to nest in the loft,my next door neighbour has 5 cats, not one of the baby sparrows madeit.
