Mystery Ill cat

One of my badkittens (actually she's a teenager) is pretty poorly. She's been at the vets since yesterday. No-one can work out what is wrong with her, so I was hoping someone might have either happy ending stories or ideas of what could be up with her.

She hasn't been eating this week apart from a bit on Tuesday. Started hyper-salivating yesterday and is nauseous but no d&v. A bit of a temperature. No respiratory symptoms until yesterday when she started rapid mouth breathing.

Vet says her blood tests including her kidneys are completely normal. (So it's not lily poisoning) They had to give her fluids and mild sedation yesterday. Overnight they say she seems active and cuddly but her temp is going up again and she still won't eat anything.

Any ideas please?

Have they run an FPLi - for pancreatitis, has an imaging been done of her abdomen ( ultrasound or x-rays) and has her throat been checked for foreign bodies?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2019 08:46

I'll ask those questions, thank you. They have done X rays.

Not sure what could be wrong, but they might be able to give her medication to help with the nausea though. If she's not eating, it'll be important to get liquids in her, could the vets help with this?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2019 17:41

Shes been hooked up to fluids since admitted and they've tried three different kinds of anti nausea medication. The dribbling has stopped and the temperature has settled. I went in at lunch time to see if I could persuade her to eat but nope. The vet says there's no reason they can find she's not eating now especially as she's had an appetite stimulant.

The most likely thing seems to be that's she's eaten something she shouldn't have. But goodness knows what.

The good news is that I'm able to pick her up this evening to see if we can persuade her to eat overnight. So the vet must be a lot happier with her.

Sorry, I missed the bit about she'd been given fluids previously. As they get older, it does take longer to recover. How old is she? Do you know if the blood test she had was a basic inhouse one or a full one that was sent away - the latter usually being £70+? If she hasn't had a full one, that would be worth doing.

I'm sure she'll be much happier in her home. Have you tried Webbox yogurt sticks, Lick-y-lix. My two always liked these and were tempted by them in later years. Most supermarkets do them, Pets at Home, Wilko. Maybe try some homecooked chicken.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2019 19:29

It was the in-house tests. £540 lighter so far. yikes. She needs to eat cos I hate to think what a weekend vet bill will look like.

She's had half a tinned sardine (with the tiniest dab of marmite as she goes mad for that). I've not heard of those before, I'll have a look.

My cats would absolutely refuse to eat at the vets. But would have their head in the bowl the minutes we got home.

Mia184 · 27/06/2019 20:45

I also think you should try homecooked chicken. My cat isn’t too fond of tuna and the like but would ignore even her favorite food for cooked chicken.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2019 22:16

I'll pick up some chicken tomorrow and give it a go. She seems absolutely fine now except she's not eating and is a bit weak as a result. She's desperate to go outside and it's all a bit challenging with our younger badkitten

I'm sorry your Badkitten is poorly.

A friend whose puppy had d and v and was at risk of dehydration was told to poach chicken and let the broth cool and offer as a drink. The chickeny flavour apparently encourages them to drink it. I know you're mainly worried about her appetite but don't know if that little tip will help you at all.

Hope she makes a speedy recovery!

TheHallouminati · 27/06/2019 22:26

Have you got any tomato plants op?

Similar side effects are reported in tomato plant ingestion in cats and dogs.

mummymayhem18 · 27/06/2019 22:45

Hope they get to the bottom of what's up with your cat x

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2019 07:53

I'll definitely pick up some chicken then thank you.

I do have tomato plants. They've been growing for a few months though and I grow them every year. I'll ask the vet though. Could be a good call, thank you.

She's eaten quarter of a packet of soft cat food this morning which isn't a lot, but maybe it's a good sign?. She's also peed all over my clothes I left on the floor last night and in the corner of my bedroom. She will not use her litter tray even though I've filled it with soil from where she normally goes. She's now trying to tunnel her way out through the carpet.

I looked at tomatoes. She's not had any d&v but perhaps.....

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2019 08:57

She's eating Grin most of a packet of soft food and some nibbles of her usual food.

OP posts:
TheHallouminati · 28/06/2019 14:44

So glad to hear that Badkitten has more of an appetite.

I suspect she's had a nibble of something she shouldn't have.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2019 14:46

I think so too. Daft cat! I hope shes learned her lesson!
