New thread as the other one is almost full. Now that the girls are getting bigger and venturing about more they’ve had an upgrade to their living space. They seem to love it so far!

That are adorable! I miss my ragdoll so much, I will definitely have another (or two) in the near future.

fergusthefrog · 17/08/2019 16:49

What beautiful babies! They've grown beautifully and it sounds like you've done a brilliant job. We begged our parents for years for cats and they eventually allowed us to get 2 12 week old kittens when I was 16.

I'm now much (Wink) older and the joy they still bring me and my family is immeasurable. I can barely remember them being this small though!

pensionpot · 17/08/2019 19:18

Ahhh so cute!! Makes me almost want another one! Forget how cute they are as kittens
My rag doll now is just such an evil cat these days Grin

Ellmau · 18/08/2019 10:21

They're so beautiful! Do you get updates from the new owners?

ladybowerscat · 18/08/2019 12:16

Poor mum cat being used as a money making breeding machine.

TastingTheRainbow · 19/08/2019 00:21

@ladybowerscat You are clearly clueless and ignorant if you think that breeders make money! It costs a bloody fortune breeding a pedigree litter reputably and is only done when we want a new show kitten ourselves. Sadly we didn’t get one in this litter. My girls are the most pampered cats you will ever see and have fabulous lives. Maybe go take your hatred out on those contributing to the rescue situation rather than those breeding ethically.

And @Ellmau yes we do. We are still in contact with every single kitten we’ve ever bred and meet up / get updates etc. I also send them all birthday and Christmas presents. You never stop missing them.

I'm not clueless, ignorant or hatefilled - just incredibly sad for the poor female cat being repeatedly bred from unnecessarily for profit. You can chuck your insults around as much as you want - breeders make money.

And take it out on those contributing to the rescue situations?? Oh the irony of that coming from a breeder!

Expenses for this litter:

HCM test prior to breeding- £39
DNA tests - £57
Stud fee - £350
Travel to stud - £40
(pregnant first time or these costs can be double)
Ultrasound scan in pregnancy - £45
Extra food in pregnancy - £50
Kitten supplies- £80
Vet bill for poorly newborn kitten - £147
Food and litter for kittens up to 12 weeks - £150
Vaccines for 3 kittens: £98
Microchips for 3 kittens: £75
Flea and wormer for 3 kittens: £45
Registration fee for 3 kittens: £36
Pedigree certificates for 3 kittens: £30
Kitten packs for new owners x 3: £60
Breeder insurance to cover mum cat for emergency caesarean etc. - £200

Total expenses = £1,457.

That’s just for this litter and does not cover unpaid time off work, the cost of buying mum cat, the cost of keeping mum cat or any problems that can happen.

Sale of kittens - £500 x 3
Total - £1500

Grand total profit - £43 for months of planning, sitting up all night with mum cat, caring for her and the kittens, hand rearing a kitten if needed, meeting prospective new owners and interviewing them, training kittens ready for the new homes etc.

I could earn £43 in half a day at work, why would I bother doing all this work for a minimal amount that will be wiped out with a next litter when we need treatment for conjunctivitis or any other common disorder.

Ethical breeding of pedigrees does not make money, you are lucky to break even hence it is only done if you are wanting a kitten for yourself. There’s a BIG difference between ethically breeding pedigrees and chucking your moggy outside to come across any tom cat.

And you think pedigree breeders contribute to the rescue situation? The vast vast vast majority of cats in rescue are moggies bred by unethical owners. Please show me all these Ragdoll’s that are sitting in rescue waiting for homes. The Ragdoll rescue that I volunteered for has recently closed down due to lack of activity. Only 2 cats in a 12 month period came into our care!

You are ignorant if you think ethical pedigree breeding is comparable to moggy breeding wether you care to admit it or not.

Aww they're adorable Halo
We got our ragdoll last year and she's grown so much! Can't believe what tiny fluffballs they start out as Halo

TheQueef · 22/08/2019 09:37

Nice thread.
It's interesting to read about breeding in a positive light plus the pics Grin

lozengeoflove · 22/08/2019 10:01

Just off to get some aloe Vera, for your burn, ladybowerscat Grin

tastingtherainbow your kittens are beautiful. And you clearly are a saint, you give them so much care and love; they are very lucky.

We have a wonderful, loving, fat mog and have always wanted a rag doll kitty. Could you please let me know if there are any downsides to having rag doll cats?

TastingTheRainbow · 22/08/2019 15:03

@lozengeoflove They moult, a LOT! You will never own black clothes ever again as everything will be covered in white fur. Other than that no, they are fab!

Lovely kittens! Many people don't know how hard it is (both mentally and financially) to take care of a Ragdoll litter. There are many hidden and unplanned costs that ordinary people don't know about. I recommend reading materials on how much it actually costs to take care of Ragdolls ( e.g. catspurfection.com/ragdoll-cat-price.html) before judging anyone. IMHO
