Another pooping outside the litter tray one

My cat has got in the habit of pooing and weeing on the floor. We put a litter tray down where she's been going and she'll now wee in that but still poos next to it.

Does anyone have any ideas why? I don't understand why she'll wee in the tray but not poo. We've used some urine odor eliminating cleaner so hopefully that will help break the habit.

Our aim was to slowly move the tray into a more convenient location and hope her bathroom habits followed with it but there doesn't seem much point starting to try that if she's still not pooing in there.

Could it be the littter? Sorry sounds daft but some are scented..or is the tray open/enclosed?

She never had a problem with it before so I'm not sure it's the litter. Plus she still wees in there - just refuses to poo in there!

We've got one open tray which is the one I've moved to the kitchen and the others are enclosed.

Have you tried placing her poo inside her tray once shes been..maybe thats worth a try.

Yeah, she'll recognise it's her poo and even cover it! Then the next time she forgets and goes on the floor 🤦

Thanks for the suggestions though!

How old is she? Does she go outside at all?

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/06/2019 08:25

Have you tried a second tray?

Kinsters · 23/06/2019 08:33

She's 3, sometimes goes outside but very rarely as there's another cat in the garden that she doesn't get along with. Tbh I did wonder whether it was related to this cat because lately she'd been going out more and seemed to really enjoy herself but then she had a fight with this other cat and hasn't wanted to go out since then. But if it was stress would it just be pooing on the floor? I'd have thought she'd have weed there as well.

We've got two cats and three trays so should be enough to go around. I'm spending the day in the kitchen waiting for her to squat down so I can put her in the tray and hope that she gets the message!

If there has been a stessor of a cat fight I would add a Feluway plug in.

Oh God I hate that, mt has been pooing under the sofa for years, I've blown up 2 aqua vacs and the local fox shits on the doorstep....up 6 steps.
She's 18 so she hasn't got many years left but it drives me potty.
The only thing that works is shutting her out of the main house and into the dining room/kitchen but then she looks incredibly sad so I relent.

My experience is that our 2 cats use one tray ( covered ) to poo in and another ( uncovered ) to wee in .

A few weeks ago I was in despair over indiscriminate weeing and pooing in 2 different rooms . I pput extra litter trays in the areas and the problem seems to have gone away .Tho I do now have 5 litter trays !

I think I'll just have to cover the whole kitchen floor in litter trays! Tbh I don't mind the pooing so much as at least it's easy enough to clean up, it's the wee which is extremely annoying and at least she seems to be doing that in the tray for now

I'll try a feliway plug in. Where do you put them though? The room she spends most time in?
