Help - one of my cats keeps weeing on towels!

We have 2 cats, brothers, rub along quite happily though one is far more of a homebody than the other.

The homebody persistently (daily, sometimes twice a day) pulls hand towels off the hook or bath mats down from the rail and wees on them. Why??? And what can I do to discourage this behaviour?

For info there is a litter tray that is positioned the other side of a cat flap to the (downstairs) bathroom where most of the Towel Weeing occurs. I make sure the litter tray is skipped out daily, fully cleaned every week.

And he can go outside whenever he likes (microchip-operated car flap).

Any suggestions?

I think i would try 2 litter trays

I have one like this too! My only solution is to keep the litter tray scrupulously clean and have the towels on a shelf he cant get to.

Definitely no UTI?
Two litter trays a good idea.
Neutered and age?

parisbynight · 21/06/2019 20:42

Yes neutered and just over 2 years old. It's happened for months and only ever on towels which seems quite deliberate so I don't think it's a health issue. He's quite nervous in general.

Personally I think it's quite considerate of him to go to the trouble of getting the towel down because that at least makes it very easy to clear up. But would of course rather it didn't help at all.

I will see whether total clean of litter tray more frequently makes any difference...

maybe try a different litter? One of mine would wee anywhere rather than use the wood litter, she only likes catsan or at a pinch the non clumping fine gravelly stuff

and more trays is good advice! Some cats will happily share , some will not....my two will share sometimes....we have many many trays, mostly as we have just introduced a new dog but generally a minimum of three.

Wolfiefan · 21/06/2019 20:52

My last two would happily share a tray. My current two will hardly share a floor of the house! If he’s a homebody maybe he feels safer on the towels than in the litter tray that smells of his brother?

One of my cats is bad for this, I get so fed up of clearing it up! I have found with mine that it is an anxiety thing and I’ve found a few things really help - Feliway plug in, Cystease capsules which you can sprinkle on their food every day (made by Feliway, I buy on amazon, not expensive) and keeping the tray very clean! Also use some special spray to clean the area which eradicated the smell to the cat as if they can smell their urine still they’ll keep going there again. Good luck!
