What to do about rescue cat?

I brought a 2 year old rescue cat home recently, he was described as extremely friendly and sociable, good with young children etc, exactly what I was looking for as I have a 6 year old. When I saw him he seemed a nice cat so brought him home, gave him lots of space and quiet time etc to settle in. However almost as soon as I brought him home I noticed he had a bit of a 'side' to him, with a tendency to hiss and lash out when stroked. Today he just went for my legs as I walked past, and I'm now worried I've done the wrong thing! Our home is really quiet and he has all the things he needs/space of his own so it wouldn't be down to a stressful environment.
Poor thing, I know it's not fair on him at all, but I worry with my young dc it's not a good match after all... please could anyone advise?

Where did you get him from, they should have been able to match you properly.

Our rescue was a bit like that to start with, but soon calmed down. I think it’s a reaction to a change in home. Must be scary for little cat.

If SnoreCat went to bite, I firmly said no, and walked away. He soon learnt it wasn’t acceptable. I did ask the vet, who said he probably hadn’t ever learnt boundaries and he needed to.

Do you know what sort of situation he was in previously as that may give some clues as to what worries him?

I would try some Feliway or Pet Remedy just in case he is stressed. Definitely contact the rescue for advice-it is part of what they do (well should do). Did your DC meet the cat before going home? Normally the rescue like the whole household to meet the cat first.
Some cats can be completely different in a rescue/adoption centre than in a home environment. He may just need a bit more time but as I say contact the rescue.

Zyklene In food is quite good as well.

Make sure he’s not bored. Give him some place high to climb to and play with him.
