Female cats more 'chatty' than males?

Just a random pondering for a Saturday afternoon Grin

I've had a mixture of females and males over the years and my girl dcats have always been more vocal. Boycats have tended to announce their arrival/presence and miaow when they're hungry but my girlcats prefer to engage me in conversation - one likes to give me a running commentary on everything she does 🙄 while the other insists on giving me a blow by blow account of her day when I get home from work; I can't just nod and smile though - I have to do the whole 'oh really... that's terrible... what did you do next?' thing while she chunners on Grin

Is it a coincidence or are your female dcats more vociferous than your boys? 🤔

Not in my experience. Current male cat never shuts up, he's such a chatterbox it's like having a proper conversation with him.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 15/06/2019 14:14

Oh, interesting! Grin What do you talk about?

My male cat never miaows! Only when he wants food and letting out

TheLongRider · 15/06/2019 14:21

We have a female black cat who is a silent movie star, she meows a handful of times. She has great facial expressions and a fantastic fuck you flicky tail!

We have a gossipy grey and white boy who loves a chat. He's like an Irish mammy and he'll tell you all the neighbourhood news!

Interesting answers! My bossy girlcat has such a range of noises ranging from chirrupy/squeaky 'I'm back!!' to disgruntled whiny 'whyyyy can't I sit on the balcony?` Hmm

Not so for my current cats. My boy cat chats away to me all the time, and has a wide vocal range. My girl only talks when she wants something Smile. I think it's down to personality rather than sex.

Thequaffle · 15/06/2019 14:37

Nope my boy is a Chatty Cathy! Can’t move without him having a word or two about it! Grin

Bluerussian · 15/06/2019 14:39

I agree, the girls are more vocal. I have one who is extremely noisy! Lovely creature, really sweet natured but goes, "Wah, wah, waaaah", all the time when she's awake. Took her to the vet yesterday and she livened up the waiting room.

Dontcarewhatimdoing · 15/06/2019 14:43

My female cat is a lot more chatty than the male. Oddly the male never made a sound for the first few years we had him, after we'd had the female for a couple of years he seemed to realise he could make noise so he now miaows a greeting and when he's hungry. She never shuts up!

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/06/2019 14:45

Our cat never shuts up, he gets whatever he wants immediately to try and keep him quiet.

The only time we say no is to going out at night, then he mugs me for an extra half pouch.

Love all the replies, thank you! Just shows how indivual our beloved moggies are ❤️

Now, which colour of cat is the most demanding? joking

No, I've had 3 girls and 2 boys and the boys are the chatty ones! My youngest boy especially talks to me a lot in a really adorable way. Or more than one way really, there's the demanding kind, but also he responds to me sometimes if I talk to him, he will let out a little meow in agreement. His older brother kind of sings in a more melodic way; not in response to me as such, more to the other cats or just because he feels like it! Grin

Vinorosso74 · 15/06/2019 18:13

We have a boy cat and he does have a lot to say for himself! Our old cat was a girl and she didn't say much at all. I have had two other cats one male and one female and I would day they were about the same level of chatty.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/06/2019 19:18

All our childhood cats were silent.boys and girls. The late Fatty was very vocal and Snorg has found her voice in the last two years. Cheddar never shuts up. You can have a conversation with her. My parents boy is also vocal as are my friends girls

girlandboy · 15/06/2019 19:22

My girl cat has full conversations with me, but not the other members of the family.
She'll miaow at them to demand food or to be let out, but I have to do the "oh really!" and "but what happened next?" thing with her.

YesQueen · 15/06/2019 19:23

My boy cat never ever shuts up. 2am "mama there's a cat outside and it's LOOKING at me"
5am "mama? The naughty cats are FIGHTING"
He even pulls back the blind with his paw to have a proper nosy

VicSynix · 15/06/2019 20:09

Our old lady cat was very vocal, being part Siamese, and we used to have long conversations with her: 'what's that, Tiddles? The children are down the mine?'. 'Are you sure you want Dreamies? Give one miaow for yes, two miaows for YES NOW'. Hours of fun!

Our now girlcat miaows a tiny bit, while boycat just makes a very feeble squeak. Much as I love them, I do miss my old lady cat Sad.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/06/2019 21:22

Our female cat is SO chatty. She also makes noises I have never come across before, which I refer to as her “robot voice” - a sort of high pitched me-me-me-me-me that she does if she sees birds in the garden, or dogs being walked past her window. She gets a treat as I leave for work in the morning and waits outside the bathroom, shouting at me to hurry up. DP says she doesn’t understand words, but I am certain she knows at the very least dinner, bedtime, outside, garden, NO (on kitchen worktops), little num (Felix Goody Bag), and sit (she has to sit to get the little num).

She had to have some dental work earlier this year, and I swear we could hear her from the street as they were bringing her through to reception for us to collect.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 16/06/2019 10:36

All my boycats have been feeble squeakers too but I've always had a 2:1 girl/boy ratio, maybe they just know their place 😹

I've only ever had girl cats and even with this I would say it depends on the cat.

Have had 2 who were average - one got very shouty but turned out to be hyperthyroid.

One almost totally silent but manipulates you by hard stares and tapping you with her paw.

And one who turned up silent but then after a week has never fucking shut up. Announces everything - her arrival in the room, that she is leaving the room, that she wants a cuddle, that she is having a cuddle, that she is hungry, that she has eaten, that she wants a poo, that she is doing a poo, that she has done a poo, the list goes on and on.

We long for the day she gets vocal cord nodules from overuse and is forced into silence.

prettybird · 17/06/2019 09:17

Over the years we've had 4 Siamese boys and 2 girls - currently have 2 brothers (1st time we've had a boy-boy pairing).

They've all been chatty - which as Siamese you'd expect Grin - but the boys are definitely more noisy than the girls. They very much announce their arrival when they've been out and about. If the yowl miaow is muffled, it's because they've brought in a bird or mouse Sad - or a soft toy that they've stolen from a neighbour Confused

But all of them are equally good at lying reminding you loudly that they need fed. The boys used to send the old girl in when their bowls were lower than they wanted them to be low Wink so that we knew it was "serious" Grin
