Kittens weeing on Duvets.

We have recently adopted some kittens from a rescue. They are settling in well, using the litter tray etc.

No accidents - until we started letting them upstairs, within minutes of jumping up on the bed, at least one of them does a wee, could be two but not actually caught any in the act, just notice a couple of minutes later. There is also a litter tray upstairs.

Kittens are three months old.

I do not think it is a toilet training issue, dirty litter tray or stress. I think it is learnt behaviour from when they were tiny and in the rescue centre. Rescue used to request old duvets to be made into bedding. So presumably down to the Mum from when kittens were born.

So does anyone have any idea how I can break this cycle?

One of mine does this : I just have to shut her out of the room : she even once did one right in front of me . She doesn't wee anywhere else (except for when we went away for a few days and she decided to wee on the sofa..). She also weed on a beanbag. I am guessing it's the appealing pummelling opportunities.

The easiest way to train them out of this problem is to shut them out of the bedrooms. In time they should forget the association between pee and duvet.

BTW specialist urine removal products with enzymes work really well on duvets. You’ll need quite a bit to soak the whole lot, but they do remove the smell.
