Where are all the tins of cat food?

I get tins, and pouches when away on holiday, so it's more convenient for my neighbours when they feed my cats. Pouches cost more than twice as much as a tin per 100grams for the same product.

I am noticing that choice of tin brand is getting less and less, whilst pouches are overtaking in popularity. Does it make sense to pay (more than) twice the price for something because it's in pouch form? Are we being steered towards pouches because they are more profitable?

What do you cat people prefer to use?

Our cat has the little foil trays but only the morsels in gravy or jelly and not the pate type ones. Of course when she decides she doesn't like a particular flavour one just when we have stocked up that is of course our fault for not anticipating her needs.

Our local cat rescue does quite well out of us with all the food we've tried and she won't eat but as our old lady is all skin and bone then we want her to enjoy and actually eat what we provide.

I buy Butchers tins from Sainsburys.

Pipandmum · 14/06/2019 16:28

Dry food in sacks.

viccat · 14/06/2019 18:46

I buy wet food mostly from ZooPlus. Lots of good quality food in cans at a good price. Bozita, Animonda, MACs, Feringa and so on...

timperley · 15/06/2019 07:48

We also use Zooplus, mine have Bozita in the tetrapaks. They are easy to open, clip shut to store in the fridge, and you can put them in the recycling.

GrassIsntGreener · 15/06/2019 07:49

I don't have a cat but surely this is against the trend of using less plastic?

GoldenKelpie · 15/06/2019 10:11

Thanks for replies. Yes, grass, I wondered that too because tins can be recycled. Dried food seems to be really popular but I would hesitate to use it because it seems to be unhealthier for cats due to possible kidney issues if they don't drink enough water. I keep several water bowls around anyway (but of course they sometimes prefer the sink or toilet bowl Shock.

Hi I’ve been a cat owner all my life and I buy from zoo plus del all food to my door it’s cheaper than supermarket food.they sell high meat content food plus some of the supermarket stuff cat litter cat toys you name it, they sell it. My cats have both wet n dry. And are doing good on both.

rockingthelook · 18/06/2019 20:12

I think it is purely a money making exercise, you need at least 2/3 sachets to make up one tin of food, therefore you have to buy more, a total rip off by the manufacturers, the pouches can't be recycled either

peridito · 19/06/2019 09:18

And a lot of the pouches have a sort of inverted pleat at the bottom which makes getting all the food out really difficult .

I avoid at all costs .Tho my cats quite like Hi Life .

MikeUniformMike · 20/06/2019 19:35

The Butchers is ok but CharlieAlphaTango isn't that keen on it.
He likes the casserole type or other expensive pouches and loves the foil trays.
I like the tins being recyclable so maybe I'll get tinned in future.
I really hate it when he leaves the meat and just eats the gravy.
He isn't keen on the budget dry food only.

I don’t use pouches now that I have 3 cats to feed and order in bulk from Zooplus.

But when I only had the 1 I would happily pay more for the pouches because my fussy madam won’t eat food that’s been open before. I’ve tried in the fridge, out the fridge, warmed up, cold but somehow she just KNOWS that I haven’t just opened the tin and so I was throwing away at least half the tin every single time. I argued that I HAD to have more cats so I could use up the rest of the tin 😂😂

MikeUniformMike · 20/06/2019 20:35

The Tecso pouch I opened had half the gravy licked off and then abandoned. If I opened a Sbeha tray, it would have been licked clean.
Food has to be 'fresh' each time, unless I'm not around.
I find that the toppings type things can 'revive' food quite often.
I've been well trained.

I feel your pain . i have found that mashing a little Lurpak spread or butter into the rejected second half will often work . But is dairy bad for cats ? Should I try an olive oil based spread ?

Also ,very weirdly in my view ,the second half is more easily tolerated if served cold ( and it's very cold ) from the fridge .Maybe it's too cold for them to detect that it's seconds and they're just responding to bowl in front of them ???

tell me more about the toppings type things of which you speak ....

WindsweptEgret · 21/06/2019 10:43

Mine loves a few bits of chicken jerky (for cats) on top.

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2019 14:38

Lik-e-liks or a similar product from Wilko.
Or a few dreamies. The mini Whiskas ones are good.

3kidsandafewcats · 23/06/2019 18:35

I would prefer to feed my cats tinned food but have tried lots of times and they just won’t eat it. Food in pouches are probably prepared differently to cans. I send my pouches to Terracycle to be recycled.

SaintAlice · 23/06/2019 18:46

Mine eat mainly dried food with just the odd pouch. But when feeding friends and neighbours cats when they're away, I am struck with the incredible cost and plastic waste with feeding pouches. My neighbour's big boy cat eats 4 pouches a day. So a box of 12 lasts him only 3 days! It's a huge amount of single use plastic to throw away and so expensive!
Cats in the old days used to eat cans, even if it has been open for a day or two and kept on the fridge, and that was that. I think we pamper our pets too much today!

Jeeperscreepers69 · 23/06/2019 23:03

Farmfoods 3 boxes of whiskas pouches 22 quid. Thats 120 pouches. My cats get one pouch each a day and tesco dried food on tap in bowls.

3kidsandafewcats · 24/06/2019 13:42

@Jeeperscreepers69 thanks for that I’ve just been to Farmfoods. What a bargain.
