Another cat food question

Our elderly cat is 21. She has grade 2 kidney failure and the vet has recommended that we give her pouches designed for cats with this issue. So we have bought this for her but she won't touch it (well apart from licking the gravy off anyway).
So now she isn't eating (well only a tiny amount). We've decided to put her back on the food that she will eat as she's only fur, skin and bone now due to her age.

Would you do the same in this postion? On the basis that she's just over 100, it's the equivalent of an elderly person having what they fancy even though they know it will do them harm. We will lose her due to malnutrition rather than kidney failure if we don't.

Thanks

Yes but maybe try some grain free options and also things like poached chicken with extra water added to the bowl to increase fluids

She's 21. Giver her what ever she will eat.

I would give a good quality wet food ideally with low sodium and good quality protein, avoiding fish. No dry as kidney cats are already dehydrated as it is... As you say, there comes a point when eating something is better than eating the renal food if they don't like it, as keeping weight on is important too.

We have ordered another brand of kidney food to try, but will try and balance this with a previous favourite. Our poor old cat. 😺

My cat is 19 and has kidney issues.

Of all the kidney specific food, she likes Purina the best, but even then isn't so keen on the pouch version (like yours, she licks the gravy off!)

I've recently discovered that Purina do a tinned mousse version of their renal food, and so I bought some of that (24 tins!) She's much fonder of that than the pouch variety.

I'm happy to send you a tin for you to try, rather than forking out for 24 cans, if you PM me your details.

Other than that, the vet recommended a senior food. So I bought a selection of those to try. Lily's trays are her favourite so far.

Cat food en route to your poorly puss.

Hope she likes it!

Thank you so much. I'll let you know if she eats it....

Hi Rattlebag. She seems to prefer this food to the other renal food but we are still trying to get her to eat anything. Even fresh chicken or fish isn't working. Thank you so much for sending it over.

We think our old lady is giving up 😿
