Am giving up. Don’t know what else to do.

I posted about my cat not eating wet food before. The vet told me he had to have wet food. Told me ones to try.

I have tried every single packet of wet food that is available. He either turns his nose up or he eats a few bites and nothing more.

The vet was very insistent that he eats wet food. But. I can’t make him eat it if he doesn’t want it.

I have tried only putting wet food down and just waiting him out. And nothing. He just goes and eats somewhere else. As he then just doesn’t eat.

He is 11 years old. Is it doing him permanent damage just eating dried food. I have tried chicken etc. He just turns his nose up at it. Or he will eat a few bites and nothing.

I must say I've never heard of a cat having to have wet food, before, though I have heard the other way around. Worth getting a second opinion?

I'm sure you have, but have you tried ones like Applaws, from Pets at Home? Seems to be a surefire winner, though not the cheapest.

WhoaBettyWhite · 10/06/2019 11:25

Why does the vet insist about the wet food? Most dry foods have the right amount of moisture in them that as long as they drink water they don't need wet food.

YesQueen · 10/06/2019 11:29

It's not ideal for male cats to have dry food only. Does he drink ok? If he does I would be tempted to ditch the wet food and give a really high quality grain free dry

moonpiggle · 10/06/2019 11:34

My cats were both at vets yesterday and was advised by my vet to keep them both on dry food, which is what my other cat only has anyway as she wont eat wet food..and iv tried everything. As long as the dry food is if good quality and has plenty of nutrients/protein he should be fine. My cats are on royal canin indoor dry and the vet recommended purina as a good quality brand also. I really cant see why he must have wet.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 10/06/2019 11:35

I have tried every single packet of food available. And I mean every packet. Cheap. Middle. And very expensive. The vet just said he should be having wet food. No other reason.

I can’t tell u the amount of money I have spent on food.

He has Lily’s kitchen as dried and loves it.

I would just keep him on that then. You can't force him to eat wet!

moonpiggle · 10/06/2019 11:38

I agree if he likes it and hes healthy then why change it.

CassianAndor · 10/06/2019 11:40

I agree, keep him on that and makes sure there's lots of water available.

dementedpixie · 10/06/2019 11:42

Does he have urinary issues that means he needs more moisture? I can't see why he needs dry if he won't eat it. Mine eat dry food mostly and get offered wet food a couple of times a day. One prefers it more than the other. Does he drink water?

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 10/06/2019 11:42

Phew. Thanks. I feel better. I have done the best I can for him. Ur right. I can make him eat it. He has water all over the house. So he has access to lots. And loves to drink out of my glass as well Hmm

I mean wet when I said dry in my second sentence btw

sanitygirl · 10/06/2019 11:44

The only wet food my cat will eat is this stuff
www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/canned_cat_food_pouches/bozita/bozita/589442
She likes the rabbit chunks in gravy best.
Worth a try? Or have you already tried it? It's a Swedish brand and I think they have far better quality standards re. the meat content than UK pet food producers

SheldonSaysSo · 10/06/2019 11:45

If its a case of needing more water, you can spray some water onto the dried food. We have to do this as have been advised our cat isn't drinking enough, it seems to be working.

bundleeveryfight · 10/06/2019 11:53

Ours was the same. Eventually tried him with the mousse stuff from Aldi that has no lumps and he eats that. Had to keep putting it down every day alongside his dry food until he eventually started licking it and now he wolfs it down. He's a lot fatter now though Hmm

mistermagpie · 10/06/2019 12:24

I have two cats. One only eats wet food and the other only eats dry - they won't switch. I have been told off by the vet about the wet food one because his teeth aren't great now (he's 10), but nobody has ever said a word about the dry food one.

If there are no health issues and they drink plenty then I can't see the issue.

grincheux · 10/06/2019 12:36

My cat can only have wet food due to crystals in her bladder which make her really prone to UTIs if she doesn't get enough fluid. Check the vet's reasons and see what else they recommend, they don't sound very helpful so far!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/06/2019 12:52

I had a nightmare trying to get mine to eat wet food after a jaw injury. She'd eat a tiny bit but not enough to keep her going. She would usually only eat it as a treat. Fortunately an orthopaedic specialist worked out what was going on and she was allowed biscuits again. It was very stressful. If your cat won't eat it, he won't eat it. Just make sure he gets plenty of water. Try cups/ glasses to encourage intake.
