Cat suddenly meowing

My cat is 8 months old and was neutered a couple of months ago. He’s always been a very quiet cat (vocally anyway, he makes enough noise crashing about). The only times I’ve ever heard him meow was on the drive home after we took him away from his mum Sad and when I accidentally shut him in a drawer Blush.

He’s a house cat and has never, so far at least, shown any interest in going outside. We were out yesterday, but not the longest we’ve been away from him, maybe 8 hours. Since we got back last night he has followed me around incessantly meowing.

He’s eating, drinking, pooing and weeing. I’ve given him various pokes and squeezes to see if anything seems to be hurting him but he’s just looking at me outraged. He’s happy to sit on my lap and let me stroke him but then it’s like he suddenly remembers something and stands up and meows at me again.

Should I take him to the vet? I feel a bit silly taking a cat to the vet because it’s meowing. I even checked my jewellery earlier because I suddenly thought he might be trying to tell me we’d been robbed Blush. We hadn’t been robbed.

Any ideas anyone? You may have guessed he’s my first cat.

Took mine 2 years after coming home to meow (they were adult already) and they still don't do it "properly". Just faint little squeaking or sort of creaking noises to get my or each other's attention. Or quiet little cries if they are in the carrier going to the vets for their annual MoT.

Does he want to go out?.

BrainScience · 02/06/2019 21:34

It it’s a fairly rubbish attempt at a meow tbf. Do yours just do it for attention, do you think that could be it?

My cat meows when he's inside and sees one of his mates in the outside.
My cat was a stray that was spending a lot of time in my garden, I've only had him since about February but I've noticed he has different cries, one for dinner and one to go out.

Is there any particular reason he's a house cat? Maybe he's been looking at the outside world and fancies exploring a bit? When I first took my cat in we tried keeping him in for the recommended 3 week settling in process but we noticed he cried a lot to go back out so we let him out and he came back with no problems. Also kept him in after neutering and he got restless and cried a lot, he couldn't wait to go back outside.

If everything appears ok and from what you have written, all sounds fine,I’d probably leave it. We’ve been cat owners for many years.
One of our cats has recently started to be more vocal and we’ve had him for 5 years. he blew the cat equivalent of ‘raspberries’ to begin with. I think they just suddenly find their voice especially when they realise it gets our attention.

My cat meows a lot. More so if i’ve been away over night. If I speak to him he answers in one word meows!
He also meows if he wants to be let in to a different room, outside, inside or have more food.
Maybe your cat wants to go out and explore. Do you live on a main road? Is that the reason it’s not playing out?

It took a couple of years for snorg to start 'talking' and she's only got really vocal since Cheddar arrived. Cheddar is a much more confident cat and hasn't shit up since day one. So I'd take it that your boy is feeling more settled

Is he on solely dried food? UTI?

BrainScience · 02/06/2019 22:25

He’s only a house cat because he refuses to go outside. I tried to get him to follow me outside again after we got home but he just sits by the front door meowing until I come back.

He has a mix of wet and dry food. Is dry more likely to cause uti. I’ve just caught him trying to wee next to his litter tray rather than in. I’ll take him to the vet tomorrow.

We were advised that dried food could cause issues. They don’t drink enough to make up the liquid they would get from wet food. I hope he’s ok.
