Rescue not homechecking

So we adopted a cat from a well known charity this weekend but apparently we didn't need a homecheck. The cat is lovely and as described but why on earth would you not? They don't know me from Adam?!

I wasn't home checked when I got my pair from a rescue, but we had spent literally a couple of hours talking, I had my very experienced cat-owning DSis with me, and the cats were to be indoor only (got the 3rd degree about managing doors to the outside). Plus I live on my own so no children, and I live a way out of the normal catchment area for that rescue so someone would have had an hour drive either way to home check.

I do think it's very much down to the circumstances of the prospective owner whether a home check is needed. If they have children, are they old enough to be responsible? What are the local roads like? They tend to be less fussed about things like is the house tidy.

We didn’t get a home check when we rescued our cat either!

I have a feeling they may have searched our house on google maps to see nearby roads/garden space but I may be wrong. (We also rescued a dog from a different charity so I may be remembering the two rescues wrong)

We adopted from a well known cat charity. They told us they’d home check. They did google map our house, we had a 90min interview with them, also numerous phone calls and emails. We asked when the house visit would be and they said it wasn’t necessary as we’d impressed them so much. But they did bring the cat to us and saw the house then, so I guess they could have refused to home him with us at that point.

It was a very thorough process.

I wasn't home checked. But I think the fact that I was willing to drive 100 miles to collect the cats and pay the expensive adoption fee was enough.

I didn't get home checked when I got our kittens. But it must have been totally obvious that I was experienced with cats and kittens and a life-long cat owner.

We weren’t home checked either (cats protection) but they said they’d look at our house location on google earth plus they took vets details for previous pets and said they’d check with them as well. No idea if they did or not. This was a few years ago.

Home checks must be pretty costly and time consuming so maybe they just do them if something makes them think it’s necessary?

Wasn't homechecked with mine either. They did look us up on Google earth and asked how many rooms we had (the most recent adoption took us up to 4 cats).

Toddlerteaplease · 27/05/2019 09:11

Think I was looked up on google maps to check for main roads.

I was homechecked by a well respected & long established charity via a scheduled phone interview which included a review of my adoption form, plus photos of my home and garden which I had sent by email.

Sparklingbrook · 27/05/2019 18:36

Home checking is generally done by volunteers. I wonder if in a lot of places there just aren't the volunteers available.

I have got a rescue kitten twice with a 20 year gap (our first kitten lived a long life). In 3 different cities but in both places they were over run with kittens and desperate to rehome, they certainly weren’t able to home check.

That is why I would never buy or breed a cat - cities are heaving with adorable kittens needing homes.

TheNavigator · 27/05/2019 18:45

2 different cities sorry

HardAsSnails · 27/05/2019 18:51

No home check for us either (from Blue Cross), but a long interview, observed interacting with several cats, and google earth checked.
