One chubby cat!

I've got 2 dcats, one is getting a bit chubby so I need to try and get on top of it before she turns into a fat cat. The problem is the other one is fine and I'm not sure how to control chubby cats diet without impacting on dcat 2. The issue is that they are both grazers so they dont come running at meal times and just nibble throughout the day. I think chubby cat eats a bit more wet food and dcat 2 more dry. At the moment they have a pouch of wet morning and teatime shared and dry food down all the time which I just top up. They also have a supper of dental biscuits but chubby cat doesn't really eat them anyway. I've cut down on chubby cats dreamies intake but the only thing I can think to do otherwise is to stop leaving the dry food down but I think that will affect dcat2 more. We try to play with chubby cat as much as poss and shes outside a lot but just sits guarding her territory mostly. I dont want to make her life more difficult as shes a very anxious cat and quite aggressive (whole other thread) but has a very wobbly tummy which needs to stop growing!

It would be good to get a picture of her chubbyness so we can judge. Grin

With a multiple cat household it is difficult to balance - have you asked your vet for advice?
A few of my cats have developed a bit of 'middle aged spread' in later life - but it's never actually caused them a problem.

You can get feeders with a microchip reader so they only open for the right cat (assuming your cats are microchipped - recommended they are anyway).

Otherwise, if they didn't have food around all the time, I imagine they would adjust to eating at meal times if the food was only left down for 15 minutes and then any uneaten taken away.

tangledyarn · 23/05/2019 15:13

Here she is! It's hard to capture her chubbiness, its defo more middle aged spread than obesity! Shes nearly 5. Might look into the microchip feeders, but maybe seeing if a couple of months of reduced dreamies does the trick first, last vets trip was about 6 months ago and they remarked she'd put on weight but was fine but shouldn't put on more..but she definitely has a bit..partly because her favoured game is to forage in a cardboard box full of shredded newspaper snuffling for dreamies so I've probably indulged that too much!

She is gorgeous! She doesn't look too fat to me. I would start by reducing the dreamies, for sure, and then go from there.

Long lost relatives??

One is seriously fatter than the other. Thanks I think to ndn who obviously has him ruined - he always comes home stinking of perfume!! He needs to consider his street cred!!

GillBiggeloesHair · 23/05/2019 15:50

I think she's perfect.
Our cats always carry a bit of extra weight and winter fur in the colder months but they are starting to lose it now.

tangledyarn · 23/05/2019 19:04

Aww thanks. Maybe for now I'll just pull back on the treat feeding and encourage some more playing and see how that goes..I just dont want to get a telling of from the vets!

She doesn't look overly chubby to me..just nicely covered :)
I suspect cats like people, come in all shapes and sizes!

Then again I do have a 24 pound night club bouncer of a MC!

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/05/2019 06:25

You could probably just cut out the dreamies to weekly and only 3.

Failing that you can get microchip cat feeders online that will feed two cats.

She’s beautiful.

Summerorjustmaybe · 24/05/2019 12:09

Not sure fat shaming your dcat is very nice op!

tangledyarn · 24/05/2019 20:05

I know I'm a bad cat owner. Shaming the poor love. Hilariously shes not eaten anything today as too busy out in the sun. Here she is oblivious to the new dreamies ban ;)

Sleep with one eye open until further notice. Fat shaming DCat1 is not acceptable.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 24/05/2019 20:20

Get a laser pen! Seriously, cats will chase a little red dot for ages and you can sit on your arse while they do it. 😁

Summerorjustmaybe · 24/05/2019 20:55

You need your dcat on the veg!!

One chubby cat!
tangledyarn · 24/05/2019 22:20

They are very similar summer! Sadly mine seems to have more of a taste for crisps and beer than veg..maybe shes masquerading as a teenage boy. Ahh the laser pen..weve got one and she loves it but she gets v v fixated on it to the detriment of other things so she'll sit and wait in the lounge for it, so it's an occasional treat as I'm not sure it's great for her psyche! She does like a dangly toy sometimes so I'll persevere with that!
Will definitely have to sleep with one eye open tonight, although struggling to get her back inside tonight so it'll probably be listening for her cries to come in at 3am instead!
