Hello all,
I need help or advice anything that anyone can give me. I have a 2 year old cat. Two nights ago he arrived home dragging his body. He couldn’t put any weight on his back legs at all. I’m guessing he was hit by a car, he arrived late at night and had been gone for a couple hours. We don’t know how long ago he had been hit or how far he had to drag himself to reach his home. We took him to the vet the next morning (yesterday) and they ended up taking some x-rays. The x-rays showed that he has 2 fractures in his pelvis. There is one on the right side that is disconnected and one on the left that is broken. They vet referred me to a specialist and said surgery would need to be done to fix that. I went to the specialist and they said they would need to put a screw on one side and a plate on the other side. They gave me an estimate for overnight care and the surgery ranging from 6000 to 8000 which is money that I cannot afford. When I let him know that I would not be able to afford that he said that crate rest might be an option but he will never walk the same and will most likely have a limp. He sent me home with some pain medicine and told me to call them if I changed my mind. When the nurse came in to give me the pain medicine she said that without the surgery he would never walk again. I did some research and found out that in most cases fractures to the pelvis heal properly on their own with crate rest 8-10 weeks. I'm concerned though because the fracture on the left is is in two pieces. Will that heal properly? Will he walk normal or will he have a limp? The doctor didn't do much to reassure me that he could in fact heal on his own. I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this and how their cat recovered? I want to know if it would be worth it to put my cat through those 8-10 weeks because it’s only been the second day and already he seems very depressed. He is used to being out and about all the time. Again any help would be greatly appreciated. I also have the x-rays if anyone is interested in getting a better idea. Thank you all!
