Our 8 year old rescue cat (we got him when he was 6 months old) used to be incredibly sweet and placid. He navigated the births of our 2 children pretty seemlessly. However for around the last year he's started constantly biting us and it's getting worse. At first we thought it was just to do with food. But in the last month he's launched himself at me out of nowhere and drawn blood, and yesterday did the same to ds (4years old).

If we are stroking him he can seem totally fine and then suddenly bite. He'll sit next to us wagging his tail and looking like he's about to pounce constantly.

We've taken him to the vets twice about this and they say there's nothing physically wrong!

What do we do, I could just about deal with it when he'd scratch me, but leaping at attackibg our 4 year old out of nowhere is a bit scary. Does anyone have any advice at all please!!

Try a pet remedy diffuser or some zyklene tablets, they might calm him.

Does the cat have enough places for him to go? Cats like to be able to perch above their surroundings and need the ability to climb and remove themselves from chaos. The behaviour you describe makes me think your cat feels threatened and confined.

Does he go out? It's odd behaviour for a cat.

Try a cat tree and some zylkene sprinkled in his food.

Do you play with him in a way where he can chase things and be “one evil kitty”? My cat’s favorite game is where she chases feathers on a dangler toy. She bites, kicks and scratches the feathery thing when I move it around, hisses, her pupils are often dilated and the ears are flat. We play this at least once a day and she comes across as the meanest and most dangerous cat on earth whilst we’re playing. I would never touch her or come near her then. But she is the sweetest cat at all other time and I think that getting rid of energy helps.

I heard that male cats play rougher than females (my cat is female) so maybe you could give it a try?

He's got loads of places to perch. We'll get a cat tree, and we've recently bought one of those bird toys to play with. He goes out all the time.

Where can I get those tablets from and are they just a temporary solution? We bought one of those hormone plug ins but no change.

Amazon sell them, or pet supermarkets.

Does he go out and is he neutered?

Wolfiefan · 21/05/2019 20:01

Sorry x post!
Any cats bothering him outside?

screamer1 · 21/05/2019 20:19

We've recently moved so there's new neighbourhood cats about, but this was going on long before we moved to the new place.

The vet recommended that we get one of those timed food dispensers. It feels like he eats a lot already though.
