Best litter tray set-up

What is your litter tray set up?

I am looking for recommendations to minimise the smell and make it as easy as possible for my 13 year old daughter to keep clean. It is definitely a bit whiffy at the moment and my husband is not amused!

I don't follow the mumsnet norm of multiple trays.
We have one large tray (actually a storage tray base) deep filled (2-3 inches) with Sainsbury's clumping litter.
I remove all clumps daily.

The only smell is when a cat has a crap and doesn't bury it - tend to remove those immediately.
The tray only gets fully emptied and cleaned once in a blue moon.
I use two large bags of litter a week.
Four cats no issues.

Hooded tray, GOOD clumping litter, or silica litter. For reference, I have 5 cats (in and out as they please through the day, in overnight). Two hooded trays, scooped regularly (4/5) times a day, complete clean and change every week. 5l in each tray. Does the job. We currently use pearly clumping litter as in the pic.

Thank you both for your advice. I think we will move to clumping litter asap. We just used the same litter as the breeder used so not to confuse him, but time now to make some changes!

We recently switched from pellets to Cat’s Best and I am impressed. We still have to mix in some pellets though or dcat refuses to use it Hmm

We have 3 trays, one hooded, for 2 cats. I was getting through a big bag of pellets a fortnight but I haven’t bought any litter now for weeks since switching so although Cat’s Best is more expensive I am wasting much less. Poos are removed immediately and then I take clumps out every few days. The only thing I don’t like is the tracking, but I wanted a biodegradable litter. It only smells really when they poo in it.

I have a tray per cat (they share but seem to use them on rotation so every tray gets used during the week, if that makes sense). I have hooded trays with the door bits taken off. Wood pellet litter.

Solids get scooped at least twice a day - my cats seem quite "regular" so I usually time the scooping to shortly after they've gone. I scoop out some of the litter that's turned to dust (from wee) and top up with an extra scoop of fresh litter. All the litter gets tipped into a bin bag once a week and the trays wiped with a cat safe cleaner. Occasionally I take them into the garden and give them a more thorough wash with the outside hose.

They only smell shortly after poo time until scooped.

I use Cats Best and it's great but does track a bit. The tracking is definitely worth it though. My boy used to have 3 trays but he is happy now with 2, one downstairs in the utility and one upstairs in my office. He's a large cat and absolutely hated the trays with hoods

dementedpixie · 10/05/2019 18:18

You could try cats best smart pellets as they track much less. I have a high sided XL litter tray

theSnuffster · 10/05/2019 18:33

We use silica litter in a hooded tray. 2 trays for 2 kittens (they both use either tray.) Remove poos ASAP, stir the crystals a few times a day. Full change roughly weekly.

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 10/05/2019 19:21

DementedPixie I have seen those but I was put off by the reviews on Zooplus. Do you find them as ‘clumpy’ as the original? (Using them would also hopefully fool dcat into thinking they were the wood pellets Grin)

Toddlerteaplease · 10/05/2019 20:49

I only have one tray for two cats. I scoop 1-2 times daily. As cheddar doesn't bury her poo and it stinks! Full change monthly. I use intersand classic litter.

WalterIris · 14/05/2019 16:50

We use cats best sensitive from zooplus. It clumps well, and we scoop and flush anything as soon as its seen (its compostable and flushable). Main tray is emptied onto the compost heap once per month ( our cats mainly go outdoors now).
It never smells. Don't line tray with newspaper as some people do as that defects the point of clumping and scooping straight out

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. We are going to try a few different things and see what works best!
