Flea question.

Spongecat has been to the vet for annual jabs, and what I thought were indications of overgrooming on her back, vet thought were flea or tick bites. I have been using frontline religiously for years, but I see now that on the Pets at Home website it doesn't get good reviews. Vet has recomended Stronghold plus, at £12 per treatment, but I can get it online for about a fiver, but need a prescription, which I havent got... Is there somewhere I can get it without prescription, or will I need a prescription from the vets, and then end up paying for that as well? TIA.

It's prescription only so you'd need to get it from the vet or pay for the prescription

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 07/05/2019 19:38

Ohhhh. Any idea what the charge for a prescription might be pixie?

The vet will have their price list for private prescriptions so it depends what they charge. I think mine charges about £8

dementedpixie · 07/05/2019 19:44

That's just the prescription price, you'd then have to pay for the product

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 07/05/2019 19:45

Ok, thanks. Really cross at their prices being over double the internet ones!

A nurse at our vets told me they can't buy the products from their supplier as cheaply as the online pharmacies sell them for.
Incidentally I found out today ours no longer stock Stronghold (their supplier has discontinued it) which is annoying. Disclaimer: I am sceptical as bloody Medivet have recently acquired them.

There are some good over counter flea treatmrnts still. Try advantage. It used to be a prescription product but it's not anymore. I dont even buy through the vets and I work there. Even with staff discount online is cheaper. Vets just can't buy it in cheap enough. Even with no mark up its often more than online. I'm a vet nurse and had huge issues with front line. Non with advantage so far

Thanks all. That's interesting! Have ordered a one month dose of Stronghold, as they still do it, and have ordered Seresto flea collar from the internet, which was also recomended. Vets quoted me £74 for it, its £27 on the net. Will consider Advantage in the future. Not ignoring recomends, had done this before checking back this morning.

No idea of cost, but I use Credellio it’s a palatable tablet. Once a month. Haven’t seen any passengers on SnoreCat since using it. It is quick to work apparently. It’s a new product.

Was using Broadline which treats worms as well, but it’s a large volume of liquid to apply on the back of neck and it has to all get on the skin. Which wasn’t happening as SnoreCat has dense fluff and I can’t find his skin.

Wolfiefan · 08/05/2019 13:34

If he’s got fleas you need to treat the house too. Indorex is great.
We use Advocate from the vet for fleas. They sometimes do a pay monthly plan that works out cheaper.

Seresto is a great option if your cat will wear a collar you should make sure that is sufficiently tight on so you can just get two fingers beneath the collar, any looser and there is a risk of it catching on things.
