Did I do the right thing? (sad)

Driving home from my night shift I came across a cat lying in the road - at first I carried on driving thinking there was nothing I could do, then a bit further up the road I realised I wouldn't sleep tonight for this king there was a possibility the cat was still alive so I did a U-turn and went back to check.

The cat was still warm, but sadly deceased, at which point a car was coming so I scooped her up and moved her on to the pavement. Then I googled how to check a cat's pulse to make extra sure Blush.

She was pretty intact but bleeding from the mouth and looked like she'd taken a knock to the head. It was just after 2am and there aren't any emergency vets nearby (if she'd still been alive I would have taken her to one anyway) so I put her in my car and took her to the nearest vets and left her on the porch - hoping they could scan her for a microchip as someone will be missing her. Sad

Now I feel bad for the first person who gets to work at the vets! I did phone and leave a voicemail saying where I found her!

Was this the right thing to do? If it had been opening hours I would have gone to our normal vet.

To clarify it was definitely too late after I'd double checked. Sad

And "this king" should say "thinking"....

Well I'm not sure what else you could have done. I would be grateful if it was my cat.

You didn't leave her to be smashed by every passing car. Went well beyond what most would bother to do (including me, if I'm honest).

I still feel terrible that I couldn't bare to touch s dead cat that I found on the way home from work, and it was almost two years ago. I called the council. Someone did move him and the owners put up a poster asking where his body was.
Do you did the right thing.

YesQueen · 02/05/2019 09:23

Yes of course you did the right thing. I volunteer and collect deceased cats and that's much more than people often do. I would be very grateful if it was my cat

I would be grateful if it had been my cat. I hope you are ok. It sounds distressing for you.

Yes you did the right thing. You sound very kind and considerate too.🌺

FWIW , yes you did the right thing.
Many years ago I saw a little B&W cat hit by a motorbike , it was leaping circles in the road then collapsed , died at my feet and released its bladder contents.
I took it to a local large chain vet (this was pre-chipping) they said they couldn't put a "Found B&W cat" poster up because there are a million of them. They said they would dispose .

I knew I couldn't leave him to get mangled either .

The vet will scan him and if he is chipped , they will contact the owners .

You definitely did the right thing. I found a dead cat on the road a while ago and moved him to the side of the road, got his address from his collar and went to the house to let them know what had happened and where he was. If it was my cat, I'd want someone to do the same. Also found a dead cat and took him to the vet. They scanned him for a microchip and his owner contacted me to say thank you. You did the right thing x
