Suncream on the cat. How?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/04/2019 07:55

SnoreCat is white. So we have been told repeatedly by vet and the rescue place that he needs suncream on his ears and nose when he goes out. That’s all fine. But how exactly do you get it on? Is there a cat friendly cream? I’m using a kids waterproof 50+ one. But it’s very scented and it makes his ears look orange.

I’ve managed to wrestle with him this morning and got it on. He was not pleased. His BBF came to call for him, and he’s gone out looking embarrassed. I’m sure he was saying “don’t look at my ears mate, my mum has covered them in stinky stuff”.

Anyone have tips for white cats?

He does look like he should be sleeping on a silk cushion all day being hand fed treats, but in reality he’s out getting dirty and doesn’t know how beautiful he is.

My cat is pure white and I have to do this as well, bit like urs he don't look impressed what so ever 🙄but I just use the same sun cream I use for my daughter so she gets some on and so does the cat lol as summer goes on he runs away as he sees me get the cream out the cupboard xxx

I was wondering this too! Mine are white with orange ears. Is it ok for them to lick it off?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/04/2019 08:01

I’m trying to do it in the morning before he goes out. I rubbed it on my hands and then stroked him, but the second ear was a battle. Had to do a lap of the house before I could catch him. He isn’t interested in dreamies, I tried to bribe him, but no chance. Have the same problem with my DD. She hates the suncream too. I have got a soltan green kids one. Might see if he prefers green ears. 😻

I used Uvistat unscented factor 30 (mine) on my cat’s ears and nose and she didn’t object too much, but she was a pretty easy-going kitty.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/04/2019 08:03

I don’t know, I imagine it’s ok because it’s non toxic, but no idea i it’s non toxic to cats. I asked the vet if there was a cat version, but there isn’t.

The vet said to use a tiny amount and only round the edges. But I can’t really be that precise. They did say a non greasy one, but also a total block. Most blocks are greasy. I might try a 30 that I use, it’s very light.

Poor boy will avoid me now.

A quick google says not to put human suncream on cats:

Sunscreens formulated especially for cats can also be applied to the cat's ears, nose and near-hairless areas. Sunscreens should not be of the human variety because they contain ingredients toxic to the cat's liver. Cats are daily groomers, meaning the sunscreen can get into its body several times a day.

My white cat and I had a deal. I'd see him in the sun, smother his ears in factor 50 white gloop and he'd roll in the dusty dirty spot caking his ears in a nice thick layer of grime no amount of washing would remove for a
Good couple of weeks- Job done!

Not fun but must be done if you don't want to have cancerous ears

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/04/2019 08:12

Ok, HiltsClemFandango, but does it suggest an alternative?

My vet said there isn’t a cat variety. I’m using the kids one which is non toxic for humans.

What are my alternatives?

So no one googled sunscreen for cats then because I just have and there are tonnes. Lots of online vets also have it in stock.
Your vet was lying op so I wouldn't be using them again.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/04/2019 12:36

We used to have to do this with our white cat. We used a kids purple stick. He couldn't get it off. Fortunately he had no idea it was purple!

MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe · 19/04/2019 13:34

A stick or a roll on might make the application easier.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/04/2019 14:58

Wow, Sammy that’s a bit harsh.

I did google it and I didn’t find any. Also the rescue place and two different vets told us human sunscreen was ok to use. They all said they’d never heard of cat suncream which suggested to me it wasn’t effective.

I have this one. It does not contain any zinc, or Salicylates.

Thank you, what brand is that? Looks good.

It is the Green people scent free sun lotion.

GiantKitten · 20/04/2019 15:39

I’m not a white cat but I have sun-sensitive skin & I've used this successfully in the past. The formulation may have changed though.

Anyway it’s white & non-greasy & the ingredients shown don’t seem to include the things Threefaries mentions (but I know nothing about chemicals)

Tubbyinthehottub · 20/04/2019 15:46

My vet suggested using a black marker pen. It's easier to apply but gets all over your hands too.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/04/2019 15:50

😆 That’s the best idea yet Tubby! Sounds practical too. I think I prefer that plan. Now to find a non toxic to cats marker pen...

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/04/2019 15:52

I realised the cream I was using, the soltan kids one has the chemical in it that a pp mentioned was terrible for cats. I’m using a teeny bit, but now worrying. My vet hadn’t mentioned this and only said any cream was ok, it’s putting it on that’s important because lots of cat slaves don’t know they need to.

OP posts:
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/04/2019 22:04

I use a kids’ factor 50 on our white cat. She hates it, and trial and error has shown me a spray is best. Our vet also said any high factor cream is fine.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/04/2019 19:33

I’ve got a green kids soltan one, and a once kids soltan one. Depends which colour Snorecat wants his ears I guess.
