Can a white cat develop black spots?

My beloved white cat went missing in 2017. He sadly wasn't chipped as the rescue I got him from weren't able to do it (they tried several times but his neck was very thick and muscular and when I went to collect him the chip was sticking out and he was very distressed) and he managed to get out and disappear before I could try and get it done somewhere else. I kick myself every day for not being quicker and for wanting to let him to settle in before I took him to the vets for it.
Anyway, I've seen a post from a rescue about a stray cat they've taken in. He is the spitting image of my white cat, however he has a couple of faint blackish/grey patches of fur at the front of his head.
I know I'm probably being daft, but would it be possible for his fur to have changed in the last year and a half? There's not been any sightings of him at all since he went missing, so it's possible he could have traveled or got into a van or anything. I would hate to miss the chance of being reunited if his appearance has changed slightly.

It might be hair growing back over scar tissue, maybe? I'm just taking a wild guess though, I don't actually know. You should go and see him, though, or you'll always be wondering. Either way, he's looking for a home...

Could it be oil on his hair?

I've got a white cat and he often comes home with grey/black patches on him as he like to sit under cars and he gets oil and dirt on him.
You won't know for use unless you go and see the cat. Good luck!

For sure * not for use.

Now I've said this, I knew somebody who had a white cat that developed a fairly big black patch on it's head when it was about 6/7.

I don't think it's oil - this cat has been quite poorly and had to have some operations etc. and fur shaved off so I'm assuming he's been thoroughly cleaned!

The rescue that have him are over 200 miles away and I don't drive, otherwise I'd be on my way there now. I've sent them a message asking about some other identifying features and I'm just waiting for them to get back to me. If these don't match up then I'll know it isn't him but I was just thrown by how much it looks like him except for the black spots

Was just going to suggest oil. We had a white day who would acquire black patches.

The rescue have got back to me, their cat has a black tail (his tail wasn't on the pictures) so definitely not my cat. Just got myself worked up for nothing but the search continues
