Keep cats out a room

Last year I moved into a lovely home with big windows that capture the sun, it was great until summer hit and the house got unbareably hot.
The upstairs windows open outwards with no catch to stop it opening fully so cant have the window open and the door open at same time otherwise my cats will get out.
Last summer was awful the room even with the windows open was so stuffy I felt I was suffocating, I need to have the doors open to allow airflow.

It's especially important as I now have a baby sleeping in the same not so big room as me and dh.

I rent so can't replace the windows and a fan all night helped cool us last year but it was still far to stuffy I felt at times I couldn't breathe.

I was thinking a mosquito net or something on the door so I can have windows and open all day for the bedrooms anyone done this or got any other suggestions?

I should also add I can't let cats in bedrooms at night anyways, one particularly pounces and bites feet and thr other sits on top half of our bodies and can't risk with baby and have young kids in the other just as stifling bedroom.

Cats are elderly rescues (we've have them almost 3yrs) but dh has said if we can't have the doors open he will push to have them rehomed and I really don't want to lose them yet

Sounds like flatcats is the thing for you. It's just a mesh, similar to a mosquito net, that keeps the air flowing and the cats in

Have a look at Flat Cats, they are brilliant window screens for making windows cat safe.

Toastypate · 11/04/2019 00:31

Do they fit the full door? We need to keep cats out bedroom at night time.

Would a door stop (wedge bit of wood would do) work for bedroom door at night to keep door ajar but not big enough gap for cats to squeeze through. It wouldn't work with mine though as they'd go crazy hoicking their arm through the gap in a bid to get in 🤪

I thought landlords had to make sure upstairs windows couldn't do this, unless its a fire escape window?

Toastypate · 11/04/2019 15:47

Landlord claims them to be fire escapes said they are designed to be thay way when I had him round shortly after moving in and realising.

I reckon the gap left would be too small for sufficient air flow while keep the cats out.

Hmm might be worth starting a thread in Legal or chat as there'll be posters who will know. I'm still of the mind that even an upstairs escape window needs to have a lockable restrictor on it or the very least to be able to have it open to vent.

Toastypate · 11/04/2019 18:33

I might look into that then. I brought it up before I don't like it not being able to be restricted in the kids rooms.

Still need a solution to keep the doors open though since my cats are nightmares if they get in my room at night and still need airflow

The only other thing I can think of that won't massively damage the property is those extra tall dog/baby gates. Assuming that the bars are close enough to stop a cat squeezing through or adapting it by adding plywood using cable ties. This is massively assuming that as elderly cats they won't be up for climbing/jumping 5ft ish height? Iykwim 🙈

I'm assuming they're a bit too old to be trained to sleep in a cat bed in the bedroom but not on the bed?

I found this OP. Could do the job if your cats don't try and break it down.

Can you open the loft hatch? We do it every summer and it does help.

What you need to do is stop the heat coming in though. You need blackout blinds and to keep all the windows shut until the temperature drops.

I put black sticky back plastic onto our utility room door because the cat goes in there while I’m at work & even last year that room was so cool.

little0miss0mac · 11/04/2019 22:22

Flatcats looks awesome! Why didn't we know about this years ago! I'm ordering this weekend - looking forward to not having to sleep in the normal furnace conditions of our loft room in the summer...

YesQueen · 11/04/2019 22:27

Flat cats are brilliant and they will make to measure too. I used them when my cat was an indoor cat

Toastypate · 11/04/2019 23:04

Flat cats do look good, going to order some for the landing window.

We do open the loft hatch, also kept the curtains etc closed but the heat just built up. I don't think it would be so bad with air flow. My ndn didn't seem anywhere near as stuffy as mines did but she has all her doors and windows open all the time.

The Hinges insect door is a good find thank you.
