Worried about spay stitches

My savannah went to be spayed yesterday morning. Was pretty traumatic for her, she came back very bruised and scared. She did have the 'babygro' on but somehow wriggled out of it and I'm a bit Hmm at her spay scar, it looks really puckered and not right. I'm trying to make sure she doesn't nibble at it but she's incredibly highly strung and won't tolerate a cone/inflatable collar or the babygro back on. Does this look normal to you? The vet said he's been spaying cats for 26 years, and I know he stitches under the skin but I'm really worrying!

I think it looks fine. I've seen quite a few (foster cats). They have three layers usually, two of internal stitches and skin glue for the top. If something goes wrong they usually look red, oozing, swollen etc. and cat will act subdued.

You do need to make sure she doesn't get to lick or pick at it so keep an eye on her if you can't put a cone or the suit back on.

Hello, vet here. I wouldn't personally be unduly concerned, it does look slightly puckered but not red or swollen. It could just be the way the skin is sitting now she is upright and off the table. If she is still eating, drinking and toileting normally I wouldn't worry too much. Can you pop her in tomorrow for a quick check up to put your mind at ease? BTW, if there is anyway you can get the baby gro back on then do, it won't help if she licks the area.

You will know if something is wrong - one of my cats managed to infect hers by licking and nibbling at it and it was obvious from the look of the wound and the way she was acting (growling and walking stiffly). The vets drained the wound and gave antibiotics - and she had to wear a lampshade for the following four weeks.

I can't get the babygro on and she won't tolerate any form of collar. I'm keeping an eye on her but I don't know what to do! I think taking her back to the vet (40 min drive away) is going to massively stress her out even more than she already is.

That looks fine, perfectly healthy and as long as she doesn't lick it, should heal great. (Ex VN here.) She will have had good painkillers yesterday and would certainly have been feeling very odd from the anaesthesia, which may have been why you thought she was scared. The main problem will be today/tomorrow when she'll feel 100% better and it'll be all you can do to keep her quiet!

Sister's cats have just been done, both of theirs looked just like that at first, and both are not puckered at all now, a few days on

Justonedayatatime11 · 11/04/2019 10:27

Ok, so I called the vets this morning who weren't particularly helpful, but I've given her a dose of loxicom and she seems happier already. I also discovered LOADS of little cuts sort of in the fold of her back leg, I presume from where she was shaved but no wonder she's sore Angry. It doesn't smell, isn't hot and she's allowing me to touch around the area so hopefully it's just me being overworried!

The spay wound looks ok to me. It's not great about the cuts on her leg though.

Justonedayatatime11 · 12/04/2019 18:25

Keeponpottingon would you mind if I pm'd you?

Does this still look ok??

That looks a bit more red and open than it should. It is though very hard to tell from a photo. Could you get the vet to check it tomorrow?

Justonedayatatime11 · 14/04/2019 21:07

It's not hot or smelly or gunky, but certainly looks like she's been butchered compared to her kittens stitches. I rang the vet and complained yesterday so awaiting a call from the manager tomorrow. Such a shame as they're normally a fantastic vets but I'm not sure I'll be going back.

Another vet here. Always hard to analyse a photo but I wouldn't be worried looking at this. It's not at all uncommon for the skin to look a bit puckered (cats skin is so stretchy!). How's she doing?

Justonedayatatime11 · 14/04/2019 22:11

NannyPear she's surprisingly perky, eating and drinking well, using the litter tray, running around more than she should... I think I'm just shocked at what a mess they've made of her. Yes she was nervous but I'm assuming they'd sedate before they shaved so I don't understand why all the cuts and nicks Angry

Glad she's doing well! Yes she would have been completely under general anaesthetic before they shaved her so I'm not sure myself the reason for the cuts :/
