Flea treatment

Our cat has just had one of those flea treatments at the vet which make the back of their neck look all greasy. It's horrible & I feel like it must be getting on everything in the house. I don't really want it on the humans in the house or the beds either.

She hadn't had one for ages and had had no issues. I've not seen any fleas. She isn't especially itchy as a rule.

The vet reckons she needs this once a month. Is this just a bit of a rip off really? How often do you all use them? Hmm

We treat ours monthly too.

No, you're meant to apply them monthly. It's a lot easier than dealing with a flea infestation in the house!

It will all be absorbed/fade within 24 hours.

Buy them online at animed.co.uk.
Far cheaper than the vets and if you get a bulk lot, free delivery too

I also have this problem, OP. The active ingredient in the flea treatment that we use is imidacloprid. Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid - chemicals known to be highly toxic to insects and implicated in the declining populations of honey bees. I discussed this with my vet, who told me that fleas are now resistant to almost everything else, and that very little imidacloprid is released into the environment from pets.

I still use flea treatment because I suspect that the chemical burden if my cat did get fleas and the whole house had to be treated, would be worse. However I do feel uneasy about it and apply it less frequently than recommended (usually just before my cat goes to the cattery, as this seems the most likely time for her to catch fleas).

I use an oral tablet. It’s new and treats for a month,, so no nasty greasy fur etc.

I like the Bravecto spot on smaller volume than the other spot ons and last three months.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 05/04/2019 21:19

Another Bravecto convert here. BiteyCat isn't impressed with greasy spot one but is even less impressed with any attempt to tablet him, so 3 monthly seems like a win to us.

We take our 3 to the vets every 6 months for a flea jab. They also worm them and give them a check over, definitely not the cheap option but as they hunt, fleas and worms were unfortunately a regular occurrence that the drops on the neck just couldn’t eradicate.

Monthly. I remember as a teen our cat got fleas, being bitten to death wasn’t fun. As a student the house we lived in was infested by fleas, the whole house had to be treated over an over because the live ones would die but weeks later some missed eggs would hatch and we we would go through the whole cycle again.

A greasy spot for a day or two is far easier to put up with than treating every soft furnishing, mattress, carpet etc.

Hmmm seems like the 3 month option or injection would be better.
Have honestly never seen / felt any fleas in years though Hmm

Well it's up to you. Get complacent enough and you might.

Monthly here as well. We got fleas, it was a frigging nightmare and annoyingly enough they didn't come in on the cat, they came in on a bag of donated kids clothes from a cat heavy house who doesn't treat for fleas.
