Cat litter and bin stink

Hi all. Grim question, but needs must…

Our elderly cat has decided to become an indoor puss. All fine, but up until now we've been bagging the waste in dog-waste bags and using the bathroom bin. However, try as we might to contain the smell, it reeks every time you open the bin and the smell lingers awhile afterwards.

How do you indoor-cat owners deal with the waste? Is it a dustbin trip every time? (We're nowhere near our bin shed and he goes at least twice a day). I was wondering about nappy waste bins.

It's got to the point where I'm worried about people coming round and using that bin!

TIA for any solutions.

Dustin outside every time.

ItsTheKissing · 02/04/2019 11:40

You need a litterlocker!

dementedpixie · 02/04/2019 11:40

Poo always got double bagged and put in the outside bin. I know my sister sits them on the outside step at first and then puts them in the outside bin when she has time later. I have been known to open the kitchen window and stick the bag on the outside window sill until I have time to take it to the bin. I wouldn't leave them inside.

Beamur · 02/04/2019 11:40

Could you put something like a nappy bin just outside your back door and empty it when you're going to the bin anyway?

VanGoghsDog · 02/04/2019 12:46

Well, I always used to just put it down the loo and flush it.

Littleduckeggblue · 02/04/2019 13:00

Pick it up with loo roll and flush it down the toilet.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 02/04/2019 13:02

Ooh, I've never heard of a litter locker! Will check that out, thanks @ItsTheKissing

@Beamur Unfortunately we don't have a back door or outside space.

You're not meant to flush them, @VanGoghsDog – something in the waste is toxic to otters and it gets in the waterways apparently. Down the loo would be a lot easier!

Flush it or bung it in the compost.

viccat · 02/04/2019 13:31

Trip to the outside bin but I live in a house and it takes 30 seconds. I have a Litter Locker too but with four cats it's not very cost-effective to keep buying the refills... For one cat it would be great though!

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/04/2019 22:48

I always flush solid waste down the loo.

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/04/2019 22:51

Just seen the post about being toxic to otters. Do you mean the actual cat poo is toxic? How?

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/04/2019 22:57

I’ve just Googled it. Who knew?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 02/04/2019 23:10

We have the same problem! It absolutely reeks, but we live in a flat, and have to go right outside. It’s going to really hum in the summer.

LeavingTeaching · 02/04/2019 23:14

We feed ours on grain free food and her poop smells of absolutely nothing! She can literally do a poo right next to us while we are eating and we wouldn't notice. Guests haven't either, so it's definitely not just us

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 03/04/2019 16:14

Yep @AlexAmbidextra, I can't remember how I found that out, but was also surprised!

@LeavingTeaching, is there a particular brand you'd recommend?

I think I'm going to invest in a covered litter tray for starters and one of the LitterLocker-type bins. Thanks for the suggestions!

We use Arden Grange potato and chicken

EachandEveryone · 03/04/2019 23:20

So do I but I either use the litter locker or i double bag in a nappy sack and it goes in the bin with a lid on. That bin gets emptied nearly every night into the outside bin.
