What do do with mummy cat and her newborn litter of six

An extended family member was evicted and had a cat which gave birth to a litter of five the day before they had to leave their home.

I took the cats in as there was no one else to have them and I felt bad for the cat who must have been feeling scared, sore and protective over her litter.

Everything is going smoothly and kittens are all healthy and feeding well but - I live in a small one bed flat on the 3rd floor, with a six year old and wouldn't call myself a cat person and have had to google my way through these last few days but I do like this cat and want her to be treated well.

Realistically the owner won't be able to take them back so what do I do with them? I don't want someone to mistreat or use her litter as just a way of making money. She's had a good life to date :-(

We are in south east London if that helps with any signposting, thanks!

Cats protection?
They take Mum and kittens here and foster and rehome.
Check the owner isn't planning to take them back though and at least get Mum neutered when it's okay to.

GRW · 27/03/2019 03:12

The catneuterer who posts on here works for the Celia Hammond animal trust in London. They might be able to help with rehoming and neutering.

Monty27 · 27/03/2019 03:46

Celia Hammond deffo

Smotheroffive · 27/03/2019 03:58

Can you keep her there with kittens until ready to go to new homes, this way they go direct and with no stress, as to the kittens this is home?

This is how we got.kittens direct from a.home that cats protection league had on their list helping to find homes for

Vinorosso74 · 27/03/2019 08:47

Agree get in touch with Celia Hammond or Cats Protection. They will be able to give you advise and could get mum and kittens to an experienced fosterer if you prefer.

NCKitten · 27/03/2019 08:49

@thecatneuterer might be able to help?

madcatladyforever · 27/03/2019 08:52

I am trying desperately not to get in my car and take the lot of them off your hands.

NoCauseRebel · 27/03/2019 09:03

Agree Celia Hammond or cpl or battersea also.

Please don’t rehome them privately as there’s no way of knowing whether they will go to good homes. TBH they probably will but you can never be sure that e.g. they will be neutered etc which would be as much of a concern for me as them not going to a loving home.

Why people don’t neuter their animals is personally beyond me. Especially cats as in this day and age there is absolutely no reason why cats need to routinely have kittens given the numbers of unwanted kittens there are out there.

If you’re unable to look after them until they’re ready to be rehomed one of the afore-mentioned rescues will be able to arrange for them to be fostered until the kittens are old enough to go to new homes.

eekeekeek · 27/03/2019 09:04

@madcatladyforever if you can give them a new home, please please take them!

Thanks all - will call Celia Hammond and Cats Trust this morning. Deffo won't be privately selling or anything as I really do want them to be happy and safe.

You must be new around here.. we need photo evidence😊

How lovely to take them all in even temporarily.

thecatneuterer · 27/03/2019 09:49

Celia Hammond Lewisham branch should be able to help you. If you have any problems please pm me.

Hamsterian · 27/03/2019 11:03

Hi,
If you struggle please pm me. I volunteer for an animal charity. Thecatneuterer is problably closer to you geographically though.

wigglypiggly · 27/03/2019 11:08

Hi, I'm msg about the kittens, whereAbouts in the country are you.

wigglypiggly · 27/03/2019 11:08

PM you

thecatneuterer · 27/03/2019 11:35

OP - please don't even consider contacting the poster above who has pm'd you. Please go through a rescue.

thecatneuterer · 27/03/2019 11:39

That's nothing particular against that poster I hasten to add! It's just that a rescue can organise for mum to the spayed, chipped and vaccinated, they will vet all homes and they will make sure that the kittens go in pairs and that mum is able to keep one with her. Kittens will also be followed up to make sure they are vaccinated and neutered.

wigglypiggly - if you're looking to adopt kittens Celia Hammonds is getting loads in every day.

madcatladyforever · 27/03/2019 11:47

I would eek, the lot of them if I was currently cat free. My current old lady hates other cats, is 16 and diabetic. I couldn't inflict another female and a litter on her.
Good luck, I'm sure they will all find lovely homes.

Smotheroffive · 27/03/2019 11:57

The cpl can direct and manage their new home placements without having to keep moving them.

I thought that you weren't sure about the original owners wanting their dcat back though.

You do need to establish that first before just giving her dcat and dkittens away?

I know I know, she dumped them on you,bit it doesn't mean she doesn't love her dcat and want it back.

How old are kittens? As dcat must stay in until she is spayed, or she will be out getting the next litter on the burn.

wigglypiggly · 27/03/2019 12:43

I was only asking as I would happily take one or two of these little kits if OP is in my area and I volunteer for my local CP and have had home visit etc. I don't live anywhere near one of the Celia Hammond trusts.

thecatneuterer · 27/03/2019 13:10

wiggly - sorry I didn't mean to offend at all. The OP is in South East London, as is Celia Hammond Lewisham branch.

wigglypiggly · 27/03/2019 13:21

There are lots of rescues in London, hope they all find loving homes soon. Hope OP posts some pics

eekeekeek · 27/03/2019 13:24

I called tWo of the charity's mentioned above - one said I was out of their catchment and the other didn't answer. I have a vet local to me and I spoke to them and was given a number for a different charity who sound lovely and can help. I explained the situation to them and the are there on standby.

It's very true that they are not my cats and I'm not doing anything without speaking to the owner and maybe making her see things a bit clearer. I just feel like it's a bit selfish to hang onto them and have them shipped around everywhere when you aren't settled and unlikely to be for a while. I just want what's best for those cats Sad
