This little fluffball will be coming home in 2 weeks and we are so excited! We met him with his mum and brother and sisters last week and have named him Pebbles. His mum is a calico maine coon and dad is a cream persian. We've never had a kitten before as our previous cats have been rescued. Sadly our beloved kitty of 6 years went missing and was found deceased after trying to find him for 5 weeks. Pebbles will be 9 weeks when we bring him home and just wanted advice on where to keep his litter box and little bed. He's so tiny should the bed, box and food be close to each other until he grows? We are quite open plan and wonder if kittens are better contained in a small area at the beginning to make them feel safe.

Oh so cute, what a little smush!
9 weeks is still quite young to leave his mum. Is there any chance he could stay an extra couple of weeks? It really helps their development, especially with things like using the litter tray.
I would try and keep him to one room to start with while he gets used to his change of surroundings. He can gradually be introduced to the rest of the house in time.
Litter tray and food should be kept a good distance from each other. His bed should be somewhere cosy, obviously not too close to litter either.
Make sure he has plenty of safe hiding spaces if things get a bit much for him.

Good luck!

thank you 😊 yes I thought 9 weeks is so young but getting him then is the 2 week Easter holiday and we'll be at home for the whole time to help him settle in. Have told my kids 14 and 12 we need to kitten proof the whole downstairs as it's all open plan and they have promised to make sure the areas are kept free of hazards. it's exciting!!

How cute!! When I first got my kitten I didn't contain him to one room, he just explored. However for the first 12 hours he hid, and found him behind the fridge all curled up! So don't be worried if he takes his time.

I've heard that litter trays and beds etc should be far apart, but as long as it's accessible it shouldn't be a problem. Will he be a house cat? Xx

You'll probably want to keep him in a fairly contained area (e.g. just one room) until he's properly reliable with the litter tray. We kept our DCat in the conservatory at first when he was on his own, but he was also allowed in the lounge if we were there. As he got better with the litter tray, bigger and more confident generally he was allowed in the rest of the house.
Do keep litter tray and food as far apart as you can - put the bed wherever you want, v doubtful he'll sleep in it if he's anything like most cats Grin
Make sure litter tray is a kitten one at first with lower sides for him to get over, and get the same litter as he has in his current home, also put puppy pads/newspaper etc round the litter tray for misses and get a bottle of enzyme spray to clean up any accidents as soon as possible.

P.S - he's adorable!!

You lucky duck! I wish it was me! Enjoy your new kitten OP.

aww 12 hours!!! I've look around and one place he could hide is under the sofa so I might try and block it up temporarily. we will leave some boxes and a little igloo if he wants to hide away. Our previous cats have all had access to outdoors but not a cat flap. Our road is quiet and the back garden is a cat playground with lots of bushes and trees but after what happened we are worried. We'll have to see how his character develops and he may be contented being an indoors.

haha yes we bought lovely catbeds that ended up being used as action men camps lol.

thanks for the litter box tips. I think the one we have will be too deep for him at first as I will look for a shallow one.
