Advice please my cat has sores around her mouth.
She's is very assertive but has never come home injured before. Do you think she has been fighting? Is it worth a vet visit? She gets very distressed at vets

My first thought was feline acne which my cat gets. He needed steroids and antibiotics when it got really bad but otherwise we just regularly clean the area at home.

I would just keep the area clean for now and keep an eye on it, if it gets worse go to the vet.

My dog had something very similar on its nose last weekend which then burst open and bled. They turned out to be an allergic reaction to something and is healing nicely following a steroid injection and a course of antibiotics. Hope she feels better soon.

What is her bowl made of?

Wavingwhiledrowning · 18/03/2019 19:19

Our cat used to get something like this. Can't remember what it was though... possibly acne? Anyway, my vet gave me a bottle of hibiscrub (bright pink liquid) that I'd gently clean the area with when it flared up. Worked a treat.

Thank you for your replies. I'm going to keep it clean & keep an eye on it. She's about 6 years old... what causes acne?

There is something where the food bowls can irritate the chin area. I think you need to use metal bowls rather than plastic to avoid it-someone else may be able to clarify which it is.
You can buy Hibiscrub in Boots. We used it diluted 1 part to 10 parts water for an infected fight wound, leave for 5 mins then rinsed it off (vet instructions).

Gingerkittykat · 18/03/2019 22:55

The plastic food bowl is just one possible cause, they can get it from rubbing their chins too much against things or like human acne just be bad luck.

I'm certain mine gets it because he drools when he is either really happy or stressed which irritates his chin.

She's also, occasionally making a different 'meow' noise. Not her normal noise. I wonder if she is in pain?
I might take her to vets just to get checked over. She's never been poorly.
We adore her; she allows us to live in her house Wink

Vets - just to be on the safe side Smile

Yes I would take her to vets if you think something isn't right. I'm wondering if it's like a rash or sting from a plant-that could be uncomfortable.
