New kitty gone for a long walk

Hey,
Not even too sure why I am posting here. I guess because maybe it would be nice to hear some positive stories...
We got 2 new cats just over 2 weeks ago. They are almost 10 years old and have both had their respective snips.
We kept them inside for 2 weeks. The male escaped once but came home after about an hour.
On Saturday we let them both out through the cat flap. They both came home within an hour. Sunday we let them out and the Mr still hasn't come home (it is now Monday night here).
I have done everything I can think of. Have scattered used litter around the garden. Put a blanket he slept on outside on the washing line. Kept the cat door so he can come back in (but going out is locked for the female cat during the night). We have put a plate of tuna outside the cat flap. I have just an hour ago stripped our bed (which he slept on) and opened the front door and put the sheets on the floor. Still nothing :(
We have already contacted our local vet and checked the nearby roads and also (luckily) nothing.
Anyone have any other ideas on what to do?

2 weeks might have been too short a time to keep them in. Have you put fliers through doors with a picture and contact number? Put it on Facebook?

dementedpixie · 18/03/2019 08:28

Are they microchipped?

Pixiedust2017 · 18/03/2019 08:30

Yes microchipped. I have put it on my local area facebook page. No fliers yet. Door knocking and flyers will be tomorrows job if he doesn't come home :(

My vet mentioned the 2am thing... I wasn't convinced it would work. I shall set an alarm. Thanks :)

Cats often do this when they are first released in a new place. They frequently spend two or three days properly exploring their new territory. If he was happy and relaxed before he left, and if he left via the catflap and knows how to use it, then I'm very confident that he will be back soon. I know it's difficult but try not to worry. It would be worth leaving a bit of food outside the house though, just in case.

I really hope so :-) we have been leaving tuna outside the catflap for him. No sign of him last night. I did a 3am walk/calling out for him as well. Will pester the neighbours this evening.

Any news?

Pixiedust2017 · 19/03/2019 21:25

No luck so far. I have put a cat litter box outside and i went door knocking last night. Will try again tonight.

Fliers tomorrow, keep posting on social media although I would have thought if someone had taken him in they'd take him to the vets to be checked for a microchip.

Really hope he turns up soon. Years ago my cat went missing for 2 weeks and then was found hiding in a barn down the road. Best feeling ever to find her again.

He came home last night at 1am! So happy he decided to come back to us! Vets have said we should keep him in for at least a week unless he decides to wreck the place (as he has already attacked his catflap and broken it trying to get out). No idea where he has been for the last 6 days. But he is uninjured and seems fine. Someone spotted him last night at a nearby church so if he does this again that's the first place I will be looking!
Thanks everyone!

That's great news. Keep him in for at least another week regardless, even if he does try to wreck the place.

Great news! 2 weeks was a bit early to let them out, the charity where I volunteer recommends keeping new cats in for 6 weeks minimum and then starting outings supervised before meal times.

😊 for you op. One of mine has previous form for escapology - last rehoming he bust out of a locked cat flap (huge strong cat, left quite a dent in the door apparently), then 2 months later showed up back at the fosterers - 50 miles away! He's been with me a few weeks but no escape attempts so far...
