My cat's cloudy eye. What could it be?

I'm so worried about my boy. In the last couple of days I've noticed a weird cloudiness in his right eye. I've had a close look and it looks like eye goop over his eye but I took a photo with flash last night - attached and now I'm really worried. Could it be cataract?

I'll phone the vet v shortly but wondered if anyone here had any advice?

It's more likely to be herpes. It's not an emergency. Just book a vet appointment for as soon as is convenient. I don't think you need to call the vet on a Sunday.

My cat had the same cloudy eye, it turned out he had an eye infection. He had drops for a while and it all healed up ok, and (touch wood) it hasn’t reoccurred since.

Thanks guys - I was sort of expecting a bit of a flaming! Forgetting I'm not on AIBU!

So, herpes or infection of some sort? How would that have happened? He's more or less an indoor boy - he goes out but only for a quick pee and a wander. He's also had a couple of loose stools, been sick a few times (but that's not unusual as he's a wolfer of food!) and his eyes are a bit goopy in general.

He was at the event in January for a full check up and boosters etc then he spent a week in the cattery. Could he have picked something up there?

He wasn't at event - he was at the vet!

I suppose he could have picked up something at the cattery, but that is a while ago. He does sound generally off-colour though, so an infection of some sort seems the most likely. Vet tomorrow morning would be my advice, unless he seems unwell, as weekend emergency vets seem to only cover the basics with things like this, so you would need to go again tomorrow probably, although your vet might have a bigger weekend service than mine. If he seems in pain with the eye, I would take him in , and do take him tomorrow, as infections can cause irreversible scarring.

Both things just happen. It won't be anything you or he has done. In both cases just eye drops (not human ones) are needed. It could be related to the cattery, but then cats in catteries don't come into close contact with other cats, so probably not.

Thanks again. He seems to be fine - his usual chatty and purry self and he's not fiddling with his eye so I'll leave the vet until tomorrow.

My cat’s an indoor cat but still managed to get an infected eye - I think it’s just ‘one of those things’ to be honest. My boy gets fairly regular UTIs though, and apparently some breeds are more prone to infection them others.

The answer to this question is often “a vets bill” 😄 I hope it’s nothing too expensive .
