Sure chip microchip catflap??

Hi so I have 3 cats....thinking about getting a sureflap microchip catflap - the one with the app which you can control who comes and goes etc! Am I crazy for wanting to spend £150 on a catflap??? We have one Tabby who is driving me crazy wanting to go in and out at night - but we don't have a catflap at the moment so it's the door or the window we have to keep opening every 10 bloody minutes! Our other 2 we prefer to keep in at night - the Tabby can handle himself (caught him chasing a fox down the road the other night!) the other 2 not so much!

I’d keep them all in at night so they don’t get run over. My Bengal has to stay in at night.

CharlieandLolaCat · 17/03/2019 06:12

Why do you need one with the app? I have a chipped one so only mine can come in and out and it's perfectly effective and only cost about £50-60.

Soontobe60 · 17/03/2019 06:15

I'm about to get 2 kittens and want a cat flap that works with their microchips. Which one did you get Charlieandlola?

DryHeave · 17/03/2019 06:26

I have this flap and love it. I’m sure a standard microchip one would have been just as suitable (but I do like looking at when the cats came in and out on the app).

@CharlieandLolaCat
Basically because I think my DH loves the cats more than me! When I said I wanted a catflap because his constant letting the cats in my bloody windows is driving me nuts he said he would be worried about his tortie coming in during the day before we get home and then going back out again and then she is a nightmare to get back at night - then DH wanders the streets calling for her like a crazy man and disrupts all our evenings!
The app says we can programme it so that we are notified when she comes in and then we can lock it just for her so she then can't go back out again if it's getting late and we aren't home yet x

@Fluffycloudland77
They do all stay in at night it's just our crazy Tabby likes to go in and out (and in and out!) literally every 5 blood minutes between about 7pm and 10pm - then he seems to be satisfied with whatever he is doing and comes in and sleeps the rest of the night. And it's driving me nuts! My DH Can't just ignore him and is up and down letting him in the living room window every 5 mins 😬

Neither me or DH would be able to sleep at night if the cats were out overnight x

@DryHeave
Thanks! Do you find your cats get a bit confused though If they come in and then you decide to lock it via the app so they can't go out again?
Do you have more than 1 cat and so have programmed it so each cat has their own access - different times of being allowed in/ out etc? X

Most determined cats can bust out of a catflap if they really want to.

1MillionSelfiesTakenByMyKids · 17/03/2019 07:06

We're manually locking ours at night as one of our boys gets Locke on by thr neighbourhood bully after dark. They seem to just accept that sone times it'll open and sometimes it won't. We do need a litter tray though sadly.

Meretricious · 17/03/2019 07:12

they Work really well, had them for years. With pretty determined cats. The app sounds fun and if I was replacing it I’d probably get the app just to see how little he goes out now he’s cold.

Ours still demands to be let out of the door though if we’re around.

lpchill · 17/03/2019 07:24

We have a sureflap it's great for our cat. Get the one with the locking on both sides as our cat managed to force it open (he's large to be fair)

It does make a click noise when the cat uses it but it doesn't bother us and tells us what he's doing

Meet0nTheledge · 17/03/2019 07:25

We have the older, non-app version. It works very well, although our neighbours cats have managed to get in occasionally by following right on the tail of ours. Our cats still sometimes pester at windows and doors if we are around though.

DryHeave · 17/03/2019 07:30

The cats are pretty easygoing, don’t seem all that fussed if we change the settings. They both have the same schedule so can’t comment on it in use for different cats.

Polkadotdelight · 17/03/2019 07:37

We have a sureflap, microchip reading catflap. We bought it to keep intruder cats out as we had a problem with a local cat. A stray cat managed to move in with us however and was clever enough to bypass the flap by hooking his claw underneath it and pulling the flap towards him (from the outside). The other cat would just batter the shit out of it until it gave in - we were woken many a night by that.

CharlieandLolaCat · 17/03/2019 08:59

@Soontobe60 this one: SureFlap Cat Flap with Microchip Identification, White, 21 x 21 cm https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003EGIM3O/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_tXGJCbHFNG24E

RandomMess · 17/03/2019 09:05

Not got the app one but standard one it's great.

I whistle trained the cats so they come running. Started off with whistling every time I fed them all day every day, then restricted it to a treat before bed (tiny bit of wet food in our case but Dreamies would do it).

They are so programmed to 10pm whistle and treat they come running even when semi comatose!

One of ours likes to be in and out lots in the evening because it's her way of telling us it's bed time...

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/03/2019 09:21

We've got the app one. We upgraded from the standard microchip one as the cat flap is in an awkward place (it's fine if you're the size of a cat!) and it's easier when we need to change the timings. We're really pleased with it and would definitely choose it over the standard one.

GarthFunkel · 17/03/2019 09:40

We have the app one - it's brilliant when you want to know if they are in or out, and how long they've been in. No, mate, it's been 15 hours since you went out last, I'm not going to leave you on the sofa so you can wake me up in half an hour to go out, I don't care if you've got the cushions just right, you need a wee. They are very good at hiding too especially when it's time to be shut downstairs overnight so now I know if they are out or just in a really good hiding spot.

And the kids have it on their phones and get notifications all day at school which provides some amusement.

StinkEye · 20/03/2019 11:14

Hi OP - we just bought this (awaiting it to be installed) and i found a really good deal on Ocado - think it cost us £125 in total, so do shop around.
