Awful breath on 5-year-old cat

As far as I can see, my 5-year-old neutered ginger tomcat is in great health. However, his breath is absolutely putrid. I can really smell it when he meows near to me.

Has anyone had any success in cleaning their cat's teeth or administering some sort of mouthwash? The very idea of it sends a shudder through me, as he can be a bit "claw-y" when roused...

Um there is an auto immune disease where the plaque attacks the skin, your cat may have ulcers. You need to see a vet. It sounds like some teeth need to be removed. I have been through this.

same with my cat, had to have teeth out

Ah ok. In that case, it's the vet for Mr Claws.

Thanks!

He probably has gingivits - a gum inflammation that I believe is a result of a sensitivity to plaque (I'm not a vet). Some cats are prone to it and really the only cure is tooth extraction. He needs to see a vet.

Our cat needed six teeth out last month because of gingivitis and some root resorption thing. She’s also five. Her breath had never been lovely, but she suddenly went off her food so we hot-footed it to the vet. £700 later, plus an awful fortnight of having to give her mouthwash as a spray, she is back to her usual greedy self. We do have insurance but it didn’t cover this because it was deemed “routine”.
