Why has my lovely boy started pooping in the laundry

We have a rescue who has FiV and is approx 8 years old.
He’s a happy old guy, sleeps a lot loves a cuddle generally very happy and is indoors except for when he ventures out on a sunny day to sunbathe.
What I’m getting at is that there’s no reason I can think of that I’ve suddenly discovered copious amounts of poo in the laundry basket. Thought at first he might have been shut out of the kitchen where his box is but it’s happened frequently since then. Wee too judging by the smell.
Not changed the litter, it’s been cleaned out and replaced and still it’s happening.
He’s also been off his food and has vomited once. He’s off to the vets today for a once over but anyone got any ideas?
Photo of my boy for attention. Hope he’s ok Hmm

Maybe he was shut out of the kitchen once, and then continued to think of it as another litter box. Maybe get another litter tray and make sure he doesn't have access to the laundry basket.

Yes I wondered if something as simple as that could have happened. Will get a litter box for the bathroom and move the laundry for now. Also note to self get a basket with lid...

Is the litter tray in the same room where he eats? Cats don’t like to eat near their litter tray so moving it into another room might help.

It is! But has been for years. I know they’re contrary things though. I will get another tray and put it far away from the food and general comings and goings of the house. I wonder if that would help.
Vet said his poo is former than she’d like and has given some lactulose. Otherwise he seems healthy but we have run some bloods and urine just to check nothing else is happening as he’s drinking lots too so I’d like oddities ruled out before I put it down to constipation.

I hope the tests turn out okay. He is a gorgeous cat!

Thanks Mia. His bloods have come back fine but one of the things they test for in his urine isn’t quite what they wanted to see. The vet is being über cautious and is running a further test to rule out kidney issues.
We are hoping it’s a case of constipation and nothing more. Crossing our fingers hard

He’s gorgeous and well done you for taking on a cat with FIV - I know they’re hard to home.

Fingers crossed for you, OP.
