Frontline Spot On - question

desperateswisswife · 06/03/2019 09:37

Have just spent a small fortune on Frontline Spot On (not in UK, so not sure if marketed with different name). Active ingredient is Fipronilum 50mg.
Reading the back of the box it says that it gives protection against fleas for 4 weeks and for ticks just 2 weeks BUT the minimum interval between treatments is 4 weeks. This means that there’s a gap of 2 weeks where Swisscat is vulnerable to ticks. Ticks are a big deal here, there are loads.

This seems a bit mad to me. Fleas I can live with, ticks no (Lyme’s, encephalitis is a thing around here).
Any advice about getting continuous tick protection? Best anti-tick collar? TIA

Frontline isn't really advised here as it doesn't work as well as other treatments. I use stronghold plus on my 2 cats

Bravecto is good.

I’m not sure about how practical it is for your cat to wear a collar but Seresto collars for dogs are brilliant for keeping away ticks and they do make them for cats.

Here

In the U.K. it isn’t used much as it isn’t effective. You will also need to treat the house (I think every 6 months) if you use it.
Sounds like it’s the wrong product for what you need.
I wouldn’t use Bravecto. We use Advantage.

Advantage only treats flea, not ticks

If ticks are a big deal where you are you need very specific advice about the types of ticks in your country. Different products are active against different species of tick for different lengths of time.
Not all U.K. products will be licensed or have the same name where you are. You may have additional products available.
However, where ticks are a really big problem it is advised that ticks are killed or removed within 24 hours. Frontline is not suitable as it takes 48hours to kill the ticks.
As you will almost certainly have several very nasty tick Bournemouth diseases I would strongly advise taking advice from a local vet who will be up to date on your specific local problems and suitable products.

Thanks for the advice all. I will have to do as Lonecat suggested and sort it all through the vet. Maybe I will show her my large collection of ticks in vodka Smile. Any kind of medication here is very, very expensive and I was trying to save a bit. False economy it seems.
