Cats and milk!

Why/how was this ever a thing?? Some woman on my local Facebook page has posted that she 'found' a cat who was hungry and thirsty so she gave him some milk and food Angry Lots of people have told her cats shouldn't have milk because it can make them very ill and she's just like "Oh well he enjoyed it so what's the problem?" FFS.

Not a lot of people are aware that cats are lactose intolerant.
She may have had cats like mine who aren't intolerant and enjoy the occasional drink of milk.
If it is intolerant she will find out in the next 12 hours when she's clearing the shits/vomit.

My mum was constantly going on at me to give my kitten milk to drink. When I told her cats are lactose intolerant and it makes them ill she said that's what they done in her day and the cats were fine. I told her they also put whisky in babies bottles then. That seemed to put a stop to it.

I'll be honest I thought that cats drank milk before I done my research when I was getting a kitten!

My car has no problem with lactose and gets milk as an occasional treat. However, the milk she gets is not homogenized; I’ve heard that homogenized milk can cause diarrhea in humans. It is pasteurized though.

Most milk you buy is homogenised. Never heard that it causes diarrhoea. Does it not just mean the fat is all broken up and mixed through the milk rather than being in a separate layer? You can get cat milk but I've never bought it

Don’t give ours milk, tried the kitten milk when he was little but he didn’t like it. Loves a bit of grated cheese now and again though. No after effects.

I told her they also put whisky in babies bottles then. I had brandy. Years later I had a brandy alexander and OMG - the memories flooded back. These days I prefer a good single-malt though. Also, left over cereal bowls with milk dregs were fair game for the neighbour's cat. I know it is frowned upon now, but he didn't come to any harm at the time.

I'd be telling her that most mammals (cats included) are lactose intolerant after infancy. Just because the cat enjoyed it, doesn't mean it's good for him. Is she prepared to clean up all of the nasty diarrhea that's likely to ensue?

Wont lie until I got my 2 I totally thought cats were allowed normal milk!

One of mine will try and barge me out of the way while I make my coffee because hes desperate for the milk that we both know will upset his tummy and even the cat milk does too.

Now I have to put the coffee in first so he is so offended by the smell he doesnt attempt to get the milk!
