Do cats get the hump?

DH and I have noticed a definite change of feline mood today. The overlords seem to have the hump. All we can think that we've done wrong is that we went on a day trip yesterday so they were at home alone between 9am and 9.30pm which they aren't especially used to as there's generally someone around. They were fed before we went and, granted we were a couple of hours late back for their tea but we always leave dry food out for them so they weren't exactly starving.

But they're definitely cheesed off with us. Is that possible?

Yes of course. I had the pissed off look today when I dared to dry my hair when my bedroom was clearly her domain for the day. Talk about miffed.

Bippertyboo2 · 23/02/2019 18:21

Definitely possible. If we went away and our neighbours fed them and they had access to indoors and water, they just would not speak to us for about 3 days, I kid you not.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 23/02/2019 18:24

Yes - absolutely. We're currently driving home from a week away and, although DCat has had daily visits from a lovely local pet sitter, he will be in a foul mood with us for about a week.

Babdoc · 23/02/2019 18:26

We were away for a week, years ago, while the builders built a new brick chimney and fireplace and knocked through into the sitting room from it outdoors. Our neighbour fed the cat.
When we got back, the cat met us at the door with eyes like saucers, and firmly led us to the new fireplace to show us what had been happening! We were in fits- she clearly thought this would be news to us, and she was very definitely not amused at the disruption that had been involved. She was quite huffy for a few days.

acatcalledjohn · 23/02/2019 18:29

Cats can be moody feckers. Our current cats are pretty unusual in that they are like dogs, they are so happy to see you.

You'll just have to patiently wait until they forgive you, you neglectful slaves Grin

iklboo · 23/02/2019 18:29

Check your shoes before you put them on. They may have left you a dirty protest.

RandomMess · 23/02/2019 18:37

Ours always "have the hump" if we have been away, forgiven within 24 hours though as they love their cuddles too much.

Justkeeprollingalong · 23/02/2019 19:05

My cat would sit in my suitcase to stop me packing and would ignore me for days when I got back 🐱

Wauden · 23/02/2019 19:08

Ours used to turn her back on you very obviously.

Wolfiefan · 23/02/2019 19:11

You were late back?!?! They’re not sulking. They’re plotting your imminent demise. Grin

EstrellaDamn · 23/02/2019 19:13

Mine went in the major huff when we all laughed at him; he seriously didn't go back to normal for about 6 weeks. I even took the grumpy wee bugger to the vet!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 23/02/2019 19:13

Ours are young enough to be grateful when we get back, I can imagine in a year or two this will change

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 23/02/2019 19:14

Our old cat used to strategically shit if she felt the Proper Way of doing things had not been observed. We'd have visitors- she'd crap in the house. We'd get a new sofa- she'd crap in the house. We'd get a new boiler- she'd crap in the house. We'd go away for the day- she'd crap in the house. Behind the front door, so we'd open the door and create a shitty poop rainbow on the hall carpet.

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 23/02/2019 19:48

We were ‘late’ home this evening so she got fed at 6:30 rather than 5. She’s punishing me by refusing to eat it Hmm

(She liked it yesterday when she had the other half of the tray)

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2019 21:05

My cars have always been very happy to see me. They don't seem to hear grudges. Cheddar is still my friend after filing her claws!

Rockbird · 24/02/2019 09:08

Day two: feline relations still frosty.

These stories are hilarious. I thought grumpy fecker cats were a myth!

Our cat went on hunger strike for a week because I had to pin him down with a towel to give him some medicated ear drops... We spent hundreds at the vets having blood tests because he hadn’t eaten in a week and the vet couldn’t find anything wrong. We were going to have to have a feeding tube put in! And then he forgave us...

scaryteacher · 24/02/2019 11:17

I find a roast chicken tends to deal with any humpiness fairly quickly.

Ds is now living at home after university, so normal slave service is maintained when I go away.

HelloJackieYouLookNice · 24/02/2019 11:40

She ate her food this morning in record time. Can’t think why she may have been peckish Grin

sharksonmyswimsuit · 24/02/2019 13:23

I dared change the food to something cheaper just as tasty. 3 day sulk where she would sit right in your line of sight and glare at you. Sulk finally ended by providing the fecking expensive correct food.

Also get the evening sulk if I am not in place on the sofa at exactly 8.30pm with the duvet over my knees for the evening cuddle. The duvet is most important. No duvet= no cuddle= great big cob on.

SagelyNodding · 24/02/2019 13:28

Mine takes about 3 days to get over us leaving her for a few days... She also shouts at us of we get home late (late defined by her can be from 4pm-actually late...)
She will turn and face the wall if we aren't quick enough to stroke her when she deigns to sit by us-she also checks to see whether we have noticed her fury when she thinks we aren't looking!

CharlyAngelic · 24/02/2019 13:29

Most definitely!
My friend’s cats would not go near them for a week after a stay in a cattery while they were on holiday.

Zwischenwasser · 24/02/2019 13:34

I once binned a ‘gift‘ from our cat. (A very very dead rodent)

She didn’t speak to me for 3 days. I mentioned to DH on day 1 that the cat wasn’t speaking to me. He scoffed and said i was nuts. Cats can’t speak, how can she not be speaking to me.

Day 2 — that cat REALLY isn’t speaking to you.

TheLongRider · 24/02/2019 14:36

Once we got a new kitten. Our established boy cats sat in front of the fire that night with their backs to us and with what my mother called "Flat cap ears!" ( Ears horizontal rather than vertical). The two boys sulked for the whole night and for two days. Eventually the kitten was accepted.

My mother would also make a point of telling the cats when she was going on holiday and when she was due back, just to avoid the sulking!

My current cats are very forgiving. When we came back from holiday last year nine if them were in the house. I went outside and called for them. I could hear my boy cat meowing for me as he raced home across the neighbour's gardens. He was absolutely delighted to see me, tail straight up and purring like a train! All was forgiven.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/02/2019 16:55

Dh was playing with ours and the game progressed from chasing the toy to “biting daddy and bunny kicking his hand” so dh tapped his head to get him to let go (14lb Bengal) and he gave dh a look of “oh, I see! Like that is it? You are dead to me”.

Didn’t speak to him for three days.

He’s always astonished that the bunny kicking game isn’t fun for us too.
