Cat’s eye suddenly odd - pics attached

Cateyetrouble · 13/02/2019 22:43

We’ve just noticed our 7 year old cat’s eye is looking not right at all. His third eye is creeping over one eye and his other eye is majorly dilated. He seemed fine and has just eaten but is now looking a little subdued - and of course it’s nearly 22.41 so can’t just pop to the vets. Have attached pics - hope you can see the problem. Any advice please??

Do you have vet phone with your insurance that you could ask advice?

Toddlerteaplease · 13/02/2019 22:46

Has he been outside. He could have a head injury.

viccat · 13/02/2019 22:46

You can call the out of hours vet's and ask for advice over the phone. Your usual vet's answer phone will have their number if you don't have it.

Peachpebbles · 13/02/2019 22:48

Possible ulcer? I'd get him seen as soon as you can

TheoriginalLEM · 13/02/2019 22:49

I think that can wait til morning. The eye itself looks fine and the pupils are the same size. Maybe an infection or possibly something in it?

wigglypiggly · 13/02/2019 22:53

You cant really tell if his pupils are equal in size because of his third eye. I would call out of hours vet.

kikibo · 13/02/2019 22:55

Could be concussion from being hit by a car.
Could you take a look at his claws, push them out? If they are worn down very much on one paw or side, the cat was hit by a car and tried to grab onto the road. Happened to our boy once, though he wasn't hurt.

littleyellowpencil · 13/02/2019 23:00

Looks like he's been knocked on the head!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/02/2019 23:04

I'd be getting the cat checked out asap. Could well be dilated due to head injury. When our late cat Bailey suddenly went blind we noticed because dd said that he looked 'sad with big eyes'. But they both went huge at the same time.

TokyoSushi · 13/02/2019 23:05

Hmm that doesn't look right, I'd see if you can get an emergency vet...

justasking111 · 13/02/2019 23:08

Oh that does not look good. I would phone the out of hours and see what they say.

Rafabella8 · 13/02/2019 23:12

I'm sorry OP but that looks like concussion. Is he insured - you should call your out if hours vet service. Good luck X

Cateyetrouble · 13/02/2019 23:51

We’re at the vets now. Will report back - thanks for all your replies!

OK so we were there for well over an hour. We're lucky enough to be really near to an excellent University Small Animal Hospital. They can't see any damage to the eye indicating injury, obstruction, infection or haemorrhage. The ears seem fine too. They think it may be Horner's Syndrome that can come about for all sort of reasons but one of which is trauma to the neck. He does appear to have two puncture wounds that indicate a deep bite on his neck and they say this may have caused some damage to the optic nerve that is situated near the neck. But he was very perky and wasn't stumbling or limping or showing any signs of facial paralysis. They were very thorough.

They gave him a shot of anti-biotics and anti-inflammatories to nip any infection in the bud from the bite and soothe any pain he might have and we've been given some to administer over the next 5 days. We'll be back to the vets for further assessment then. They also detected a galloping heart beat which is indicative of heart disease. So we'll be looking into that as well - it's never been detected before.

He's back home now. Seems happy enough and we're happy having had him checked over and are relieved that he doesn't appear to be too fussed by it all and isn't in any imminent danger. I'm glad we went tonight even though it set us back £170 and we don't have insurance eek!!

Get insurance quick. Investigations into heart disease are very expensive. Around £500 for a scan and consultation. Glad he's ok.

Too late if a problem has already been noted

Cateyetrouble · 14/02/2019 08:06

Yes, I think the horse has bolted on that one! I suppose in 30+ years of cat ownership we’ve been lucky. We’ll do what needs to be done and it will just have to go on the plastic.

Only just seen this. Hope all goes ok. He’s so handsome.

Cateyetrouble · 14/02/2019 08:22

Thanks Wolfiefan. He had a vet and 3 final-year vet students fawning over him last night and was loving most of it. He only strongly protested when they gave him some injections. The amount of fur he left behind in the pristine examination room made me realise why I need to hoover so often 😄

So happy hes ok, I expect he will get lots of extra fussing todayFlowers

scaryteacher · 14/02/2019 13:24

It c an also be worth finding a feline chiropractor/physio. One of the vets near me does it, and he has helped my cat walk again, and when I took him in this week, he found a dislocated jaw, and two vertebrae misaligned, which the regular vet had missed. When I notice his pupils looking different, I get the cat to the alternative vet asap, as he does for the cat heat my osteopath does for me....clicks everything back into place. This vet also does acupuncture on cats...and they lie there purring!

Wolfiefan · 14/02/2019 13:28

Bless him. I remember the fur. Had a semi long haired girl and found wisps of fur for many months after she finally died aged 19. I do love a tabby and I swear he’s pouting in those pics. Grin

ifonly4 · 14/02/2019 14:33

How's your boy today?

Cateyetrouble · 14/02/2019 18:00

He’s been his usual sleepy self but perky enough when awake and sitting on the window sill watching the world go by 😊 His third eye is less prominent and is just in the corner of his eye but the pupil in that eye still looks smaller than his other one. We start administering his oral meds tomorrow and an appointment has been made with our vets on Monday. Thanks for all your kind comments and sharing your own tales.
