Super aggressive elderly cat

Hi, so, I’ve had my cat for nearly sixteen years. Just a run of the mill tabby. He has always been quite aggressive towards me and has always bitten and scratched. He never actively looked for me though, it was more in passing or because I had no socks on.
As he has gotten older his aggression has become quite scary. He regularly (two to three times per week) bites me and causes wounds and generally intimidated me. Tonight he ran at me out of the blue and has bitten through my jeans and left two big bruises and puncture wounds. There was absolutely no reason for him to do it. He’s had a full mot at the vets recently and is actually really healthy for an elderly cat.
I’m worried he has dementia and that’s why his aggression has really increased. He has several litter trays, as much food as he wants and generally just has attention when he wants it.
I’m beginning to feel like I can’t live with him any more as he’s pretty scary and I worry he will turn on the kids. Any one got any advice on what to do? Thanks if you got to the end!

Does he go outside?
Do you play with him? (And how?)
Does he have safe spots?

So he can go outside if he wants to when we are in the garden, but he very rarely does, he’s been a house cat his whole life. We play with him when he comes for attention, usually with those catnip mice or the feathery wand, he’s not so bothered now he’s older though. He does like lying on the bed and being stroked, but he’s very unpredictable even there and he never used to bite me when he was on the bed. He can go to his hammock on the radiator or in my bedroom. He has blankets under the bed there and behind the curtains.

I want him to be happy in his old age and he obviously isn’t. It’s really sad.

It could be dementia. I had a chat with my vet recently about my senior cat and she said some do become more aggressive with age (while others mellow).

Mine is now on a supplement called Aktivait that helps with brain function, it might be worth trying?

It could be a tumor. A friend of mines cat was aggressive and they found out It was a tumor
Best to get the car to the vet x

That could be an option to try, I’ve booked him for the vets this week. It seems so sad he’s really fit and healthy in every other way.
