Please help me find a way to fix this!
Recently me and my partner moved in together, this meant mixing my 4 year old anti social male house cat with his 9 month girl kitten. We were anxious about how this would go as my cat is a very grumpy sole with anyone but me, much to our surprise after a day or two of small fights they settled in nicely together and have lived happily for 2 months.

Until now, girl cat has gone into heat for the first time. She's not spayed because we intended to let her have a litter of kittens but right now I'm 6 months pregnant and it's not the right time.

Day 1, Cats were fine, male cat followed her around curiously. Day 2, male cat got fed up and started hissing at her to go away. Last night and this morning male cat is very angry. He doesn't want to be near kitten, he growls constantly if she's in the same room, when she yowls he goes to find her deliberately to hit and bite her and is lashing out viciously at me and my partner.

Does anyone know is this anger because he doesn't "have the right parts" to help her? Is he just wanting her to shut up? When kitten is sleeping all he wants to do is cuddle up with me as close as possible.

We've got some calming drops coming today and have decided it will be best to get kitten spayed soon if this doesn't stop but until then I could send male cat for a couple of days break in my family home (where he lived since birth) but would it make them worse when they're brought back together?

Thank you for reading such a long read, me and my pregnant bump are getting quite stressed.

Get her spayed - she is well overdue and unless she is of breeding stock then there is no need for more kittens in an already overpopulated cat world!

Cats can be spayed in heat so I would get her booked in ASAP!

Having kittens because you want them and think them cute is completely the wrong attitude to pet ownership.

Fluffballs · 06/02/2019 12:08

Thank you it's my partner that wants her to have kittens, but I will talk to him and we'll get her sorted asap. Do you have any advice on his anger?

Get her spayed.

thecatneuterer · 06/02/2019 12:21

Why on earth would he want her to have kittens. There are far too many cats in the country for the number of homes available. Every litter born just makes the situation worse. It also isn't good for the cat.

She needs to be spayed. That probably is the cause of the male cat's aggression. It's hard to know.

dementedpixie · 06/02/2019 12:22

No need for her to have kittens. What is his reasoning?

lljkk · 06/02/2019 12:24

They'll never be friends, just stop him from hurting her which probably means keeping them apart. I hope you can talk your P into getting her spayed ASAP. Having kittens isn't a kindness for the cat.

InSightMars · 06/02/2019 12:29

His anger? This is about the welfare of the cat not him. Tell him to grow up and get over it. There are too many cats in shelters.

Get her spayed. She doesn’t need to be a mother, she’s a cat she won’t care if she never has a litter. Right now it’s stressful for her too, not only your other cat, it’s cruel to let her stay in heat pending a time you deem right to let her get pregnant. Tell him that and also, it won’t just ‘stop’.

lljkk · 06/02/2019 12:56

I think OP meant the boy cat's anger, not her DP's anger.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/02/2019 13:16

Heat can be continuous in cats, she needs to be booked in for her op and hopefully they’ll go back to being friends.

Why on earth would he want her to go through a birth with no pain relief? It’s just odd. It’s what people did in the 1970’s.

If she’s not spayed is she vaccinated and microchipped? De-fleaed and wormed?.

Vinorosso74 · 06/02/2019 13:22

Agree with others get her spayed asap!!! It's not worth the risk of her having kittens especially as a big kitten herself! She has no awareness whether she has kittens or not. Call the vets today.

viccat · 06/02/2019 13:27

So, so frustrating the neutering message is clearly not getting through to people like your partner with his plans to let her have kittens. Sad

Cats Protection estimates there are 9 million stray cats in the UK and even if he thinks he can find "good homes" for all the kittens, it all contributes to the overpopulation problem. If you want to experience caring for kittens, foster a litter of kittens for a cat rescue.

It is possible your girl cat's changed behaviour is upsetting the boy cat (nothing to do with his "bits" though - he still has a penis!). Hopefully they will go back to peaceful co-existence after girl is neutered ASAP.

Fluffballs · 06/02/2019 13:32

9 million? That's awful. Forgive my stupidity I've only ever had my boy and he was fixed straight away, I just assumed my partner knew what was best for female cats. We'll get her all sorted asap.

She’s looking for a mate and he’s the obvious choice so she’s pestering him, he doesn’t want to be pestered so he’s warning her off. They’ll revert to normal behavior and get along better once you get her fixed.

Wolfiefan · 06/02/2019 13:35

Poor girl. Get her spayed and make absolutely bloody sure she cant leave the house until this is done.

Plump82 · 06/02/2019 20:17

Getting her spayed at a young age can also help prevent cancer.
