Hypothyroidism in cats

I've had my cat for nearly two years. Not sure how old she is as I adopted her from a rescue shelter. She had been living as a stay and the shelter had no background on her. My vet says she's probably over 12.

She had recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and my vet suggests radio iodine treatment which would mean me leaving her in a specialist centre for 2 weeks.

Does anyone have any experience of this treatment please. I'd like to go ahead with it but would like to hear from someone who had experience of this treatment for their cat. Thank you

I have had several patients have this treatment very successfully.

I assume it's v expensive?

Sparklingcat has an overactive thyroid but it's ok at the moment with 2 tablets a day.

Thank you. It's good to hear that the treatment is successful. The treatment is expensive, about £3500, but luckily my pet insurance have confirmed they will cover the cost.

I'd rather not have to give her tablets every day. The vet said the radio iodine is usually a cure rather than just managing the condition. I'm not sure about leaving her for two weeks, but am starting to think it may be best for her in the long run

I'd love to hear from anyone else whose cat had had this treatment. Thank you x

I’m sure we were told longer than two weeks but that was years ago. And I vaguely remember the idea they would treat one side but the other could end up needing the same treatment. As ours was a very elderly cat who wouldn’t have coped well away from the comforts of home we opted for tablets.
